LED under truck lighting suggestions

After seeing Tacovendor's(@ Expoberfest 2011) and frozenground's setups, I am looking at suggestions for my own setup. After nearly stepping on a rattlesnake this year up in the Sequoia Nat. Forest I think this is a valuable addition to my truck as to hopefully avoid this from happening again. Frozenground's setup is around $120 for the set on Amazon, and Chris' is around $60 per light pod if I remember correctly that they are BD pods. I would like the most durable, not necessarily the least expensive option. That being said, I don't mind saving money either. What are your initial and down the road impressions of these two options, and others that I may not be aware of? I am looking at specifically LED lights for the low power consumption so that I may leave them on if needed/wanted during the evening hours.

I have a box of six of these these waiting for me to get them installed. I can tell just by handling them that I will have a very hard time damaging them as they are certainly purpose built and I am very happy with their construction. You may not need or want as many.

LED Strobe and Rock Light Kit by Vision X

Wil of Sierra Expeditions had these lights installed on his 1st gen Tacoma truck and they looked great, with the added advantage of being able to synch them to your stereo for that authentic disco-expedition effect. He had an install thread along with a video if I recall. I've been meaning to do that, guess I better ring him up so I can mount them uo this winter.

I am looking at the lights that Wil sells too.
Reading up more on the multi colored kit on Visions site.
http://www.visionxusa.com/Accent_Li..._ROCK_LIGHT_KIT_MULTI_COLOR/product_info.html

It does not state that it can do all colors as in selection which color you want to use, or if it simply contains LED pods of different colors.
Anyone have information on the multi colored set?

It is either that one if they are selectable, or I would go with green.
I see a few vids on YouTube, but nothing about the multi colored ones.

PS, found a multi colored kit installed on an FJ Cruiser.

The VisionX Tantrum lights are great. The come with 8 small light pods and two control boxes. One spider box that all the lights plug into. Then a second box that has a line coming from the spider box and then a power line with a 12V accesorry plug on it. You can cut the plug end off and hardwire it in. The lights are controlled via a small keychain remote size of a alarm or factory remote entry. They have many mods, solid on etc as shown in hte video links above. The thing I like the most is the size of the light pods and how easy it was to tuck them up and out of hte way.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I think I'm going to go with the VisionX from Sierra. They have been a pleasure to deal with before and think they've earned my business.

The Vision X would be perfect if you could them without the strobe/disco effects for less $.

You don't have to use a relay with LED lights correct?

Tim- the VisionX lights are user controllable from constant on to a couple different strobe patterns. You do not need to use a relay for the lights. They actually come from VisionX with a 12V lighter plug to plug in and also instructions to remove the plug to hardwire for power. Here is a break down on pricing and what I think are PROS to the Tantrum system from VisionX.

1. $120 average price most vendors
2. 8 small low profile lights with all wires and controls(tuck up easier to avoid damage and complete system)
3. Power consumption minimal since they are LED(since most of us run a lot of electrical gadgets power consumption is big factor)
4. User friendly with keychain remote and progammable output( as walking to or from the vehicle can turn on/off lights for safety and see what is around)

Standard Farm utility lights for rock lights

1. $15+ each(8x15= $120) or even if you go with the $20 driving light sets from local auto store you would still buy 4 sets for $80+
2. Large size making more difficult to find mounting space and keep protected.
3. 35-55w each shorter bulb life much higher power consumption
4. Need to provide wiring, relays, swtiches(higher cost)
5. No remote option to turn on off for safety when approaching or leaving vehicle.

I've got the Vision X on my rig. I hardwired and bypassed the controller box, I wasn't crazy about using a remote and I didn't like the strobe effects, nor did I ever use them. Here are some pics.

Saw your post and checked the link. Ordered (2) to check them out. Pretty impressed with the housings, and the light output. I temped one on, in the bitter north wind, just to see and I'll be ordering more, no doubt.

Order one for the lacking engine bay lighting. Try the magnetic mount for awhile, to see if it'll maintain.

Have no personal experience with any of the other listed product offerings, but these are impressive, based on what I've seen.

For what it's worth.

Get some 3/4" rare-earth disc magnets from ebay, epoxy to some VisionX's with something like e6000 glue, and Bob's your uncle. Great adjustability as long as you have plenty of metal surfaces.
