Thanks for all the input!
I'm going to call Cruiser Dan and compare the IH8MUD price to the one from the link posted by Valkyrie as well Onur's price in Albuquerque, no way I'm paying retail.
You should've seen my face when the dealership told me the MSRP, it must have looked pretty funny.
The worst part is that I've only had the 100 for a few weeks.
Looks like all of my fun mods are on the back burner, oh pues.
Thanks again.

Onur works for Dan. He's just easier (if you call in the A.M.) to reach most days: Same deal whether you talk to Onur or Dan. But I have been turning Onur into the Hundy parts specialist lately :Wow1:

I'm with Slee, make sure this is the correct diagnosis first.

It could be you are paying for a $2000 bottle of KY when you actually just need some other part.

why not check car-parts.com or some other junkyards? $2000 is insane. I bet junkyards would have it for $100-500.

Yes, that would be the same part number I got... and I believe it is for 98-07. But I would still double check with one of the Toyota Parts Gurus.

Yeah, I saw that but it showed as not available and none in US dealer stock. Without knowing the actual diagnosis I didn't pursue it any farther upstream.

Johnny, if you can get an accurate diagnosis (or better yet, a second opinion) of the actual problem post it up... my curiosity is piqued!

Not really, 100 still stops better than the 80 with larger tires :D

Not saying it doesn't. Just feeling the pain for anyone who would have to pay 10% of their vehicle's value for a brake master cylinder. It's like having your spark plugs wear out and having to replace the cylinder head.

I'd MUCH rather have the 100 brake system than the 80 brake system and anyone that's dealt with 80 brake headaches would sympthsize.

I would definately look for that part through a wrecking yard. But as Christo said, its probably something else.

Could be something as simple as a fuse or loose wire or connection, if the master cylinder is electrically powered. Look for the really easy stuff first before you replace stuff you don't need.

One of the problems with Land Cruisers is they are so rare, most shops and even dealers that work on them...yours is the first one they've seen. So, I wouldn't trust anyone's diagnostics unless they have actual LC experience.

Anyone else replace a 100 series master cylinder recently?

Some number of years ago I had the master cylinder ABS/VSC pump assembly fail in my daily driver, a 1998 GS400. At the time (2005?) it was a $1500 part. The problem was related to the VSC pump presumably failing a pressure test of some type, resulting in the VSC and ABS systems disabling and a constant, loud tone from the VSC warning buzzer.

They're very easy to replace (assuming that the 100 engine bay is at least as open as the GS bay). IIRC the only trick was bleeding the brakes didn't go exactly as I expected -- I think the trick was to let the VSC pump handle things by holding the brake pedal down, as opposed to the press-open-wait-close-release cycle.

My advice, if you're interested in doing it yourself, is to get the factory service books, and go through the (excellent) troubleshooting/diagnostics procedure for the system in question. You can look at the steps required to do the service, and you can decide if it's something you'd be comfortable with sourcing parts and servicing yourself, or if you'd rather have someone else do it.

Other than the standard disclaimers about it probably being an important part of the vehicle to repair properly (and keep clean while repairing), there's really not much to it and I'd recommend the DIY route if you're comfortable with doing so.

Edit: If I recall correctly, there's a special procedure for bleeding a new MC/ABS/VSC unit, just putting fluid in doesn't do it. If you intend to do DIY, I emphatically recommend the factory service manuals.

Bump, any updates from the OP or any other 100 Series owners on brake system failures? I just picked up a '00 100 Series that is lacking nearly all braking, full foot pressure and the low range will push right past it at anything but idle. ABS & VSC lights are on. I've had literally 5 minutes to look at it today, going to start tinkering with it as I get time.

What is the issue with the 80 series breaks? I have never had any issues that would be unique to the 80 break system over any other break system.
