Here is some nice info on the 3.3 on Proffitt's site.

http://www.proffittscruisers.com/engine-conversions/diesel-engine-options/cummins-b3-33l.html

Cummins B3, 3.3L Land Cruiser Diesel Engine Conversion
A lightweight, reasonably priced, fuel efficient choice.
The B3.3 is a compact little diesel made by Cummins but was a joint venture between Cummins and Komatsu. Mostly found in industrial equipment, this engine performs quite well in Land Cruisers with 33” tires. It produces 85 hp and 215 lb-ft of torque. Proffitt’s Cruiser’s has installed this engine in numerous Land Cruisers including 40’s, 45’s, and 60’s. Reported fuel mileage is roughly 27-29 with a 5 speed manual transmission. 85 hp may not sound like much, but this little engine does quite well and is actually quite peppy. The B3.3 works really well with 3.70 gearing, 33” tires, and 5 speed manual transmissions.

Cummins 3.3L Pros
More compact and lighter than most other diesels we install
Both engine and parts readily available
Reasonably priced (just over $5000 new)
Easily adaptable to lots of transmissions
Delivers good fuel economy 25-35 mpg reported
Good choice for alternative fuels like WVO and bio-diesel

So how does this B3 compare to a 4BT as far as physical size? The problem with a 4BT is that its tall from the bottom of the oil pan to the top of the valve cover, so if this is more compact then I could really see it being a fantastic swap in an XJ.

It is almost a 200lbs difference.

Fully dressed the 3.3L weighs 567lbs versus the 750lbs of the 4BT.

For reference the Jeep 4.0l is often listed around 500lbs. I do not know in what state of dress that is, but at least it help with some perspective.

I think he is refering to this Brute that was at Overland Expo...I don't know what motor it had in it, but it sure did sound like a Cummins.....

All I can say is that it was amazing!

I know Dave built his own LJ with a 2.8, but said the wiring harness was too difficult to ever do another one. Maybe market factors have changed.

This was Jordans Jeep. AEV Dave's brother. I think the engine was swapped out by the second owner not totally sure on that though.

This is my Brute.

AEV did the conversion.

It has a Cummins 3.3 QSB, electronic Diesel, 5 speed. 210 Ft/lbs of torque at idle, close to 390 ft/lbs max torque. I got 30 MPG on my first tank of diesel.

I have put about 500 miles on it so far and drove it back from the Expo to Colorado. I will post some pictures of the engine tomorrow.

Dave is considering offering this as a conversion option.

WOW! You got 30mpg on 37" tires. Now that is awesome.

How is cruising down the highway? Any issue with going 75mph?

Do all your gauges and everything work? Do you have A/C? Cruise Control?

What does the QSB mean behind the 3.3?

What 5spd does it have? Where they not able to use the stock 6spd NSG370?
