Visit to Unicat factory in Germany

The factory of Unicat is out in the country in the southwest of Germany. It consists of an office building and a huge hall where about 20 persons are building incredible expedition vehicles of probably the highest quality in the world. In spite of the economic recession Unicat is thriving. They do not have many customers anymore in Europe and their effort to try to conquer the US-market has failed. Their business now is coming from Russia, Mongolia and China. In the last year alone they sold 9 expedition vehicles to Mongolia and right now they are building two huge vehicles for Russian clients. A new product for Unicat is a Unimog as a SUV: looking like a grown up Hummer.

There are many pictures to share but for the moment it is impossible to upload them to this website for unknown reasons...

This week at Unicat they are building two huge expedition vehicles for Russian customers. They use the new Mercedes Benz 1833 and 2733. Note that Mercedes uses the Unimog doors on these new trucks.

Unicat building the camperbox for the Mercedes 1833 as wished by their Russian customer. It is a family with two children so there are two bunk beds besides the parental bed. Rare to see round windows.

Outside the kitchencounter is being build. There will be two fridges.

Meanwhile the sides of the camperbox to be mounted on the Mercedes 2733 are being prepared. To become a huge expedition vehicle.

Unicat also builds a Unimog SUV looking like a grown up Hummer. For this a Unimog 5000 is used and the body is modified. They sell this vehicle for example to oil companies to use in the field.

Outside the Unicat factory a range of their vehicles are parked. Some are simply in storage. Although Unicat is not involved in selling second hand expedition vehicles, some of these Unicats are for sale but directly from the owners. For example the brown MAN from an English owner: only 20.000 km with a later installed full automatic gear box of over € 40.000 ($ 50.000). The almost new truck is for sale because the owner's wife is seriously ill. It costs over € 300.000 ($ 377.000). Sleeps two.

Many thanks to Mr. Bernhard Söllner from Unicat for great hospitality and permission to make these pictures.

Obviously Unicat has found a new market. Very rich people who live in a part of the world where it makes sense to have a sophisticated expedition vehicle. One customer even came to the factory by helicopter. It is also interesting that Unicat continues to be one of the few exclusive builders of excellent expedition vehicles. Not in Russia and not in China they are able yet to build this kind of high quality vehicles.
