What just broke on my Rover?

Won't it be funny if it just popped out of the gear and t case is in neutral :-D that happens often to lt230 during off road

I was too panicked to even think of that...

We're it a half shaft though, wouldn't the unbroken axle still propel the truck? ...or are you guys saying that because it's an open differential, it will spin all the power to the broken corner?

Yes. With an open differential, all the power will go to the broken side. The Borg Warner in your year Range Rover is supposed to lock automatically in such circumstances, but by this time, some of the viscous couplings in them are worn out and don't lock, or lock all the time. On a Disco or pre-89 Range Rover, you can lock the center diff manually with a lever on the console.

"high pitched whirring."

so power goes somewhere, and this somewhere has filed teeth that don 'catch' anymore?

record the noise if you can for future references.

check and smell tranny fluid just in case.

edit : that "thunk" you heard may or may not be a bad thing. well, worse thing.

ive had automatic transmissions for a number of years, and they usually dont just give up with a "thunk" out of nowhere :)

Half shaft and axle are the same :-D if it's broken and ur transfer case viscous coupling is not working , your range rover won't move anywhere. U can check just as fast as replying to this email. Put ur truck on drive and have somebody look under see if the shaft is turning . or lift the front or rear of the truck up and turn one side of the wheel , see if other side turns . It will take u less than 5 min to check

I appreciate the input from EVERYONE. As I was literally stuck in the middle of a 6 lane road, I had the truck hauled away and didn't take much time to diagnose...

She's at my trusty mechanic's garage and I'm away on business. I'll keep you all posted with updates so that we can declare a winner for the guessing game.

I vote broken diff cross pin. should have pulled the e-brake and tried to drive, that would eliminate front or rear

Popped out of gear. Broken motor mounts and poorly adjusted linkage. Basically had you pulled back on the lever, it would have gone forward.

Could be the pump in the trans, chain in the t case, broken diff/cv/shaft but I doubt it.

I had a message that said the internals of the transfer case came apart. I'm not really certain what this means, but I'll speak with them tomorrow.

What are my options? This is a 1994 LWB with a 4.6 swapped in.

Replace the BW transfer case with an LT230 with CDL.

I would say with the torque of the 4.6, this might be the best idea. I've done the swap on my 92 Rangie, and it definitely feels more agricultural now, compared with the BW, which was more quiet and refined. However, the LT230 is stronger, no doubt. I do think a BW in new condition could stand up to the 4.6 though.

Both have their merits depending on driving style and use. I've got the LT230 and a 4.6 in my '94 and love the combination. Replacing with another BW would certainly be the easier route.

I found a mint LT230. Is this a direct bolt in?

No. You will need the frame mount for the transfer case, the driveshaft from a Disco or Rangie with the LT230, The handbrake and linkage from the LT230, and the diff lock linkage from the LT230.
