Diesel News: POST HERE

Will GM put the 2.0L diesel, with its 258 ft lb of torque and 6 speed Aisin automatic transmission, in the new Colorado pickup? Or maybe in small SUVs like the Chevy Equinox? The AWD Equinox with gas V6 that produces torque similar to the Cruze diesel engine gets only 23 mpg highway.

We can hope, but I wouldn't be too surprised if they decided not to.

"Lets just say my truck doesn't have those limitations any longer."

Since you live in California, what happens when you take your modified 2012 RAM 2500 in for its annual smog inspection? Maybe the RAM 2500 is in a weight category that has different rules than light trucks.

Smog here in California is once every other year. I have about 11 months left till mine is due. Not looking forward to putting all the stock stuff back on for a day, but that is what must be done.

It is just a visual. Took my 2nd gen for a smog check, nothing legal about it, no cat, straight pipe, big shinny turbo, BHAF air filter, after market intercooler, edge comp with a edge ez stacked, did not touch a thing and it passed and i was down the road $55.00 later. Those guys have no clue what they are looking for. I figured they would dig me for the no cat, but they said nothing. They do check the odb for codes, that was it.

Automotive News is reporting that European version of the Jeep Cherokee will probably include a 2.0L Fiat MultiJet turbodiesel. The engine will be rated to produce around 270 lb ft of torque. That's more torque than the 3.2L V6 gas engine makes. No word on the 2.0L diesel for USA, but it would be a nice fit in the Dodge Dart and Dodge Journey models that share the Cherokee's platform.

Mercedes has released details about the 2013 GLK 250 Bluetec diesel SUV. The 2.1L turbodiesel produces 369 ft lb of torque, and is rated to deliver 24 mpg city, 33 highway. The GLK 250 is priced about $1500 more than the GLK 350 gasoline powered model. But the diesel package includes AWD in the base price. AWD is a $2000 option for the GLK 350, so the diesel model is cheaper overall.

Mercedes will use its new four cylinder 2.1L diesel as the base engine in all 2014 Sprinter models. Truck Trend says it's the same engine as in the GLK 250, but tuned with commercial use in mind. In the Sprinter, the 2.1L turbo diesel will produce 265 ft lb of torque from 1400-2400 rpm. That's about the same amount of torque that the original 5 cylinder diesel produced in the first generation Sprinter. The 2.1L engine is paired with a new 7 speed automatic.

The new Sprinter should appear in USA in Fall 2013.

I have not read anything other than speculation about a diesel for the Colorado. Most articles I've read mention the 2.5L or 2.8L diesel that Chevrolet uses in its midsize truck built in Thailand, not the 2.0L diesel coming to the Cruze sedan.

The first light truck to offer a diesel option will be the Ram 1500, coming this summer. The drivetrain will be the 3.0L diesel and 8 speed transmission used in the Jeep Grand Cherokee. I'm excited about this vehicle. Add a new flatbed camper from XP Camper or Four Wheel Campers, and go!

Fuel economy probably is the #1 reason why people choose to buy diesel passenger vehicles. Gas/electric hybrids provide a fuel efficient alternative.

Case in point: the Porsche Panamera S E-Hybrid. The E-Hybrid pairs a twin turbo V6 gas engine with a plug-rechargeable electric motor that is powered by a lithium-ion battery. The result is a luxury 4 passenger sedan that can reach 60 mph in 5.5 seconds, has a top speed of 168 mph, and can average 53 miles per gallon of gas consumed. The vehicle can drive about 22 miles on battery power alone. The battery can be recharged in about 2.5 hours from a 240V charger.

That mpg figure is the average of 42 test runs by automotive journalists who recently logged about 750 miles around a test loop in Germany. The route included city streets, country roads and no-speed-limit autobahn. Each vehicle carried 3 or 4 passengers. In other words, this is a real world test, not a laboratory exercise.

Porsche doesn't make a diesel powered Panamera. A similar vehicle is the Mercedes S350 Bluetec diesel, which is EPA-rated at 31 mpg in highway use. The new Audi A8 diesel is rated at 36 mpg highway. It will be interesting to see what EPA rating is assigned to the Panamera S E-Hybrid when it arrives in USA in late 2013.

The only sticking point with these sedans is price. The Panamera S E-Hybrid list price starts at $99K.

That and the fact that the electric charge is only good for 22 miles!

Plug-in electric for "only" 22 miles, but 50+ mpg the rest of the time. So no big loss.
It still utilizes the EV portion during normal driving with regenerative braking, electric motor assist, and powering accessories during start-stop.
That's how it gets better fuel economy even when it's not running in EV mode.
