Potentially building a Disco2. Thoughts? Opinions?

Evening guys and girls,

So. The time has come for me to go ahead and get going with a build. A little bit of background, as far as my off-roading/overlanding experience: None.

Yup. That's the truth. Barring some trips down some poorly maintained service roads, and the occasional cruise through a field, this is all new to me. I've spent PLENTY of years modifying cars, and they've usually been ones that are a bit less than simple; mostly Audis and Volvos. I'm used to having to turn a wrench, and I'm used to things not always working perfectly. I've grown up camping and backpacking, but it'll be a new experience to me involving a vehicle.

Here's what I'm looking for/looking to do:

1. Build a rig that not only will be suitable for some off-roading, overland camping, and expedition type trips, but also can serve as my daily driver.
2. Have something that'll comfortably transport me, the misses, and our 90 lb. Rottweiler x Doberman.
3. Start slowly and introduce myself into the world of off-roading, with hopes of getting good enough and comfortable enough to tackle terrain as would be presented in the Vermont Overland Trophy.
4. Safely and comfortably get my brood off of the beaten path for weekend/extended trips that DON'T involve a KOA or some other pay-and-park type deal.

I'm not overly scared-off at the idea of dealing with a car that can be "quirky", to say the least. I've done my fair share of homework, and I understand that the Rovers can be less than complacent when it comes to issues. That being said, I'll always have a soft-spot for a European car, and I'm no stranger to weird niggles that come with the territory.

As a point of reference, I'm also considering a ZJ with the 5.2, or a 2nd generation Isuzu Trooper. Looking for some insight and opinions on the Disco2 versus these other models, as I'm basically stuck wishing I could just own all three, lol.

Note: I'm not opposed to a Disco1 by any means, although the road comfort of the D2 is always nice. What it really comes down to is there being a seemingly larger number of D2s available up in my neck of the woods. At the end of the day, I'm not too hung-up on whether or not it's a D1 or D2, so long as it has the CDL (either with the full set-up or just the nipple that can be rigged). In a perfect world, I'd love an '04.

... I'll also put it out there that I'm, always it seems, entertaining the idea of a P38 as well. I know, I know. But still. They're just so... I do love them, lol. Outside of the obvious, any thoughts?

So there ya have it. A guy and his quest to get things sorted and get on out there.

Thanks in advance, and nice to meet all of you!

- Jeff

Some quick thoughts:

Look for a 2004, they seem to be the most reliable and with best options.

Look for a truck with a detailed service history.

Buy a truck with mods (lift, tires, body armor, sliders, winch, etc) already installed and save a ton of $$$.

Pull up the carpets and the padding and check aggressively for rust.

I definitely would love to find an '04 if that's the route I go. From what it sounds like, it's the best bet overall. As far as buying a previously modded truck, I'm on the fence. It'd be great to save some money that way, but I'm also hesitant unless I can find one with an extensive build history. There's also a part of me that feels like as I'm starting out new to all of this, I sort of want to have a truck that really is mine... Built the way I feel best for me :)

I have been obsessed with discos a long while, from all my research a 97-99 D1 seems to be the best bet, otherwise get a 2004 D2

Jeff-
Follow up from the PM we had earlier today; you know my thoughts (and my bias towards D1's) but I will take a similar view to RobG4's on the 04 Dii (which you seem to have embraced). Getting the 4.6 + CDL is the way to go if you're going to go Dii. Not to mention it will be the youngest of the litter. I'd second the idea of the best one maint records can document too.

Unlike his suggestion though, I think the idea of getting a stock truck is fine-they are extremely capable in that form and that lets you start building the truck as your requirements dictate. Hell one of the team's we rolled with during VOT had a stock Dii (Team 6) with just a decent set of tires. Mind you I don't think Matt would have done that if it wasn't necessary due to partner shifts at the last minute, and the truck did take some hits-particularly on the rear where the Dii's departure angle is...somewhat less than optimal.

The upside to the bad departure angle is that is more space than the D1 will provide!

Definitely appreciated the PM, Ray, and the follow-up too. I think, assuming I settle on snagging a Disco, that I'll take the time to try and find an '04. The most extreme wheeling I'll probably ever do (on my own volition) would be something along the lines of VOT. Not looking to make a crawler here, so I'm okay with losing a bit on the departure angle in favor of some extra space. Between me and the pup, we take up enough room, lol.

Being that I'm new to all of this, I really feel like I should start fresh with a stock rig (unless something good comes along). I have a rough idea for what I think I'll need, but I'll never know until I'm out there doing it. I'm also sort of keen on giving some stuff a shot with a mostly stock rig, barring perhaps some better rubber.

Good stuff Jeff, and good luck-they're out there to be found. A buddy of mine grabbed an 04 with 80k on the clock (solid maint records) for a decent price about 5months ago. I was shocked when he sent me the pics.

Today I got a text (it is a stock truck) "Thinking of a little lift and more aggressive tires...thoughts?" So it begins.
Seriously though a 2" lift and 265/75's of a decent flavor will do a lot for that truck. Personally I'd suggest a front winch bumper...and that's about it beyond recovery gear and basic tools-then just go play with it!

I'd probably opt for the OME 2" and 265/75 TW Wardens right off the bat, just to have a little fun with. Bumper and winch because, let's be honest, I'm new and probably will need 'em, lol. From there, working backwards, sliders, a rear, the moving up to a rack...

... I could actually probably sit here all night and "build" a rig in my head, but truthfully, the lift and tires are all I really should start with, lol.

Really depends on your budget. My d2 build is turning out great right now, but I have soooo much invested in it. Although they do have their issues, once you get those sorted you'll be good for quite some time.

Admittedly, your D2 is one of the vehicles I genuinely envy.

As far as a budget, I won't go as far as to say "I don't have one", because that implies that I have all sorts of money to do all sorts of things. Which I don't, lol.

... However, being that the vehicle will be my DD, I can justify spending a bit more on it in the way of parts/maintenance because, though it also will be a hobby, it won't be JUST a hobby. If that makes any sense?

To steal a quote, "80 Series Land Cruiser is the answer to every question on this forum". But in all seriousness Disco's are a great bang for your buck, don't let the reliability scare you.

Hahaha, fair enough! If I could find a decent LC, I could seriously see it posing a conundrum...

... Right now, I think I'm leaning more towards either the Disco or the Trooper. The ZJ just seems to be a bit more of a compromise on some things for me, the more I break it down and overanalyze things.

Agree with everything above...and bought my first '04 D2 in February.

I wanted stock (tend to be driven less rough than fully kitted), 5 seats, and no air suspension...and preferably not east coast - but mine did end up from NJ by way of SD. A lot more rust than I'm used to out west...but nothing catastrophic.

I've slowly been working out the issues because mine is not a DD. Full 60k service (truck has 110k but assume the worst), new driveshaft (with zerks), fixed SAI solenoid check engine light, new SVS plus the mod to fix the 3 amigos, new brake pads, OME 2" suspension, winch bumper going on this weekend...

Expect little things (I didn't know what "3 amigos" were before I bought this thing...nor did I know that there was a "SVS fix") to go wrong, but I don't mind them - again...not the DD so it can sit on blocks in my driveway like it is right now.

I'm not really keeping track of the budget, but it hasn't cost all that much and it's an awesome vehicle to work on and play with. I've always been a Jeep guy but have had a soft spot for LRs...and now I don't think I would ever turn back. Go for it...and have fun.
