Time to retire the F150

My F150 needs brakes, power steering rack & pump, trans work, IWE's replaced and a myriad of other work.

I've always had a love-hate relationship with this truck and it's time to let it go.

Like they all say, depends on what you are using it for. I agonized over the question of what to replace my 08 FJ Cruiser with. FJ with roof tent is just too small for us on extended trips. I decided on a low mile 2000 F150. It seems the best balance of power, storage space, and reliability, as well as global logistic network. I chose an older model because I wanted a stripped down model with less electronics. And I don't think it will take much suspension modification to increase the payload or offroad performance.

That is a tough one. I am not sure I could walk away from my f150. The versatility they offer and the availability of parts for me is hard to match. Good luck.

How many miles on the truck? How much is the repairs? Seems like a young truck to retire it....

186K.

Needs brakes all around (including parking brakes & stuck right front caliper - 3rd stuck caliper in it's life)
Power steering pump leaking
Steering rack leaking
Left front wheel bearing & ABS sensor need replaced
Factory LS rear diff is shot (rubbing when turning),
Computer is throwing a EVAP leak code
Both IWE (4WD actuators) need to be replaced
Drivers door got caught in the wind and over extended bending hinges...lock plate doesn't line up
Shocks need replacing (still factory)
Leaks oil from filter adapter plate and other places
Consumes coolant.
Valves are ticking (cam phasers)
Left turn signal on trailer harness doesn't work
Consumes oil (leaks & maybe burning)
Has factory plugs still
Has factory O2 sensors still
Trans dipstick tube is rusted through (allowing water into trans?)
Rust bubble has formed on roof right above windshield
Entire frame has heavy surface rust
Main wiring harness connector (between front & back) has broken clip...held together with zip ties
Hood release handle broken...need pliers to pull
Misc interior & exterior cosmetic issues
It's a Ford.

You still thinking another pickup?

At the moment I am determining if a '99-'01 4Runner will suit my needs. My main concern is towing. Towing the 16' aluminum fishing boat should be no big deal, but I occasionally need to haul a load of hay for the horses. 100 bales of hay = ~5000 lbs plus the flatbed trailer itself. This exceeds the rated towing capability, but is only for about 20 miles on flat country roads so going 30 MPH is no big deal. The trailer does have brakes.

If I can't make myself comfortable with that towing scenario I will probably look further into a first gen Tundra.

I wouldn't try that load with a 4 runner...even with trailer brakes, I think you'd be getting pushed around. That's a big laundry list of repairs. I'll be watching to see what you get to replace it with.

whats your price range for a new vehicle? have you considered getting a superduty with a diesel engine? or another F150 (newer)?

Do plan a new or used truck? If you are going used it would be cheaper to fix what you have. You could get a reman motor with a warranty. Just a thought.

I will be going used. I don't believe it would be cheaper to fix this truck. Besides, I already replaced the engine once (at only 28K miles) and over the years I have lost any passion for this truck.

I would get something very reliable, sounds like a lot of your current truck issues are maintenance items. Stay away from superduty diesels unless its an old 7.3
