The design as we go M-101A1 Trailer build

And with the rain that we desperately need in Los Angeles comes BAD LUCK. really just stupidity on my part. Being a wood worker i'm a safety freak. double check everything. I did so on the trailer before I operated the lift. How that one clamp that was pointed skyward slipped my eye I don't know. And skyward it went and the clamp hit the patio cover and with the torque of the motor broke 22 teeth on the carriage and 250 lbs dropped a good 12". Luckily I wasn't inside. Aside from a few popped rivets it wasn't a major catastrophe but I WILL be rebuilding the screwdrive from scratch rather than using the garage door lift system although no doubt in my mind it would have held up. Anyway it pushed me to dismantle the trailer which I will do tomorrow because I have to clad the interior box so it was going to be 'broken' down anyway. Well needless to say no one got hurt and the loud bang again only ended up with two popped rivets. Tomorrow is another day

Luckily I can still keep the lead screw and was able to find a bolt casing with the same threading and spent the morning encasing it in the new carriage system. It will take a lot to break this thing but that won't excuse doing stupid things in the future

The new and improved encased home built linear slide rail actuator

So far so good

Got the door fitted. Since it sits on two planes exactly 1/2" apart (created by need for weatherstripping) it fits a drawer slider perfectly. I had 16" drawer sliders laying around since I'm a cabinet maker and although the door travels 19 1/4" I took out the limiters on the drawer slides and what do you know?!?! It travels exactly 19 1/2"! A little over travel but who cares right? Anyway the door will slide up and down with the top as needed or even with the door open and will also operate independent of the top

So now the door slides up and then swings up

And although me and my girlfriend are relatively short since this will be the area where the shower heater will be it makes a perfect opportunity to hang the shower enclosure

Not exactly how it will be in the end but you get the idea.

The top-hinged door is kind-of one of those head smacking 'a-ha' moments that I get sometimes when following along on other peoples' builds ... since you first posted your rough-in shots of the door, I've been wondering how you were going to hinge it. Nice fix!

This is going to be fun to follow.

Thanks. It had been on my mind..I also was considering a bottom hinge as well with steps but we will be pretty close to the ground that a step stool will solve the step issue. Usually these types of campers have two side hinge doors that operate as stable doors operating independently but I just have other issues affecting swing and it just didn't seem like a fun solution. I have yet to prove that this method will work once all the skin is on but I just like that it will serve as a shower enclosure as well but again another thing I will have to prove is a viable solution

While waiting for some other skins to get bent I was able to rout out the front window opening. This will be hidden behind a tongue box so rock protection won't be an issue. I will also be making my windows from 1/4" smoked plexi that I have an abundance of.

I'll call it a little bit of a stress creator. 3M VHB 4941 tape unlike welds and rivets there is virtually no room for error. This stuff is so expensive and if your panel doesn't line up once you lay it down if you don't have the special removal tools then you have the potential to ruin the panel you just laid. Test run and fitament and alignment are required and jigs to keep frame at 90 deg and square are a must. Since I lay veneer sheets on a lot of my cabinets this is second nature but it's always worthy of a few hold your breath moments

I work in the sign industry.
We use the same tape for road signs.
We get remakes of signs where they have been hit by trucks the poles and signs are mangled but the tape is undamaged.
Strong stuff and like you said one shot to get it set right.

Excellent build! Can't wait to see it all skinned.

Success. Hard to tell from this pic but this panel is pretty close to 100 deg as it's been in the sun for a bit and can't touch it but so far very little warpage with strips every 6" and all along the edges. 3M claims there will be virtually no visible warpage due to heat unlike bubble prone rivets. Time will tell and the heat of so cal summers will ultimately be the test. Otherwise 3M will get a call but I doubt it highly

Skinning the interior box. This one will receive rivets because I'll have inspection areas that I'll need to get to just in case of mechanical failure or service. Not so much worry here..they're going on pretty quick

Should probably call it the aluminum coffin!

Soon to get the top skin on but deciding on rooftop access points and vents for water heater so once those are figured out I can probably get to my metal guy

Diamond plate to go on the rear end

This last section will most likely have access doors on top for water heater vent and storage compartments

This is me standing on my roof structure with very little deflection. Once the roof is on this will be pretty rigid and if nights get warm will work great as an RTT base although solar panel will probably take priority up here

Haha silvr...you know I'm bringing them back. Actually they were my rock climbing pants. I took a fall on a route and the carabiner fishhooked the hole at my shin. I'd say it was a freak occurrence but it's happened to me before. Once I was wearing shorts and if not for my climbing harness that held my shorts in place because it ripped all the way up to my belt and I would've been exposed to the world ...since I roll commando. Anyway instead of scrapping the pants I cut them into shorts and yes they have a corduroy texture to it
