Thinking about a Tacoma

... would like to get opinions from those who may have experience.

Long story short, I must have a serviceable truck in the stable and am at a bit of a cross-roads with the beloved T-100.

Tundras are intriguing but they are just such big loads these days.

That leads me to thinking about perhaps a double cab Taco... can I get one with a long bed? or do I even want that?

Or do I dare say wait for the TRD Pro to come out?

Or maybe even put things off until the Tundra with the Cummins is available?

What would you do if you were in the market for a truck?

Want list includes:
-must be a Toyota
-Need seats for 4
-Prefer larger bed for excursions; want to outfit with largest topper I can reasonably fit
-Not towing anything; hitch to be used for things like bike racks
-Parts availability for modest level of modifications is a factor
-Need reasonable trail capability but FJ will continue to be main off-road vehicle
-Would love to have locker and/or A-Trac

Your must haves fit a DC perfectly. Just cannot get a manual in a LB. Otherwise your set.

I love my Taco DC - I got the manual tranny, which means a 5' box. The auto tranny comes with a 6' box. I have a family of 5 that fits in the DC very well.

To me, I think the Tundra fits your needs better than the Tacoma. It has plenty of bed space, ATRAC, loads of cabin space, and off road capabilities are not bad, actually. You already have the FJ for the trails. It would seem to me that a Tundra would give you a broader range of uses for your fleet.

The automatic transmission with the TRD electronic gizmos (ATRAC and locker) is not bad. Just a thought if you are hooked on the Tacoma. On the other hand, the double cab with the long bed is just about as long as a full size so you lose the main advantage of the Tacoma. I didn't need the back seats so I went with the access cab (fits the dog fine).

I just bought a DBL Cab Long Bed TRD Sport ( as mentioned the road package not avail with a Long Bed BUT i don't really need it anyways)
This is my everyday vehicle. If i had the driveway space i would have gotten a beat around pick up and car for work, but i don't need or want or have room for a 4th vehicle for just 2 people.
I used to have a colorado dbl cab w/ a 5' box (company truck)... and many many times i cursed it. You couldn't throw 2x4 stud in the back without having to strap it down.
My needs for a pick up are different, more so for around the house work. I have the Land cruiser for camping and trips.
I haven't taken delivery of it yet, but I'll post back after driving it for a few thousand miles.

So, you CAN get a double cab with a long bed?

I'm looking to offload my Avalanche when I get back home to Phoenix, so like the OP, I'm in the research phase for a Tacoma.

Yes, DC is available with a Longbed.

Also available with a V8. It's called a 1st gen Tundra.

You can get a double cab long bed but only with the automatic trans and no TRD off-road package.

Ha...I'm done buying new!
