XJ sleeping dimensions

I'm considering an XJ for my next 4x4, as I loved the one I had a few years back, but I'm a little nervous about whether I'd be able to sleep comfortably. I'm 6 ft tall, and I'd rarely be sleeping in the vehicle without my large dog. My girlfriend will probably be with me about half the time, as well. I will be building a semi-permanent sleeping "system", but do not want to have to open the hatch to be comfortable. I prefer to sleep on my back, so curling up isn't in the cards.

I'm thinking that we'd be stretching the limits of an XJ, but I'd love to find out I'm wrong. Anyone got experience with anything similar?

Thanks!

Ive slept in mine half a dozen times. First off, rear seat has to go. I usually fill footwell with extra sleeping bags or other crap to, and lay out stretched diagonally. If i had a platform high enough to clear the wheel wells and center console, i could almost fit a full size mattress.

with rear seat folded down (not removed) - front to back = 5 ft

between the wheel wells - side to side = 3'7"

from the drivers side door to the passenger side at the tailgate - diagonal = 5'11"

Agreed. Remove rear seat, slide passenger seat as far forward as possible, fill footwell until it's level, sleep diagonally. It's acceptable for a couple nights but nothing great. Isn't good for couples, even if she's a lot smaller. Dogs work fine if they're good at curling up around your feet.

At 6', you're making the right decision to go full size, especially for two people. I'm 5' 9" and can sleep comfortably in the back on a diagonal, with the rear seat folded. If you push the front passenger seat all the way forward, it's exactly 5'9" from the back of the front seat to the closed tailgate. However, the rear seat bottom sticks up above the trunk elevation so you need something elevated to sleep on, or remove the back seat completely. With a good platform, I've also slept with my feet on the center console and my head to the rear; that works pretty well.

I've been looking at swapping my front passenger seat for a fold-forward seat in order to get a little more length. I've previously read that people use old TJ seats and even Mazda RX seats, but neither is a direct swap.

Didn't two door XJs have fold-forward seats?

If you pull the bench (designed to be removed) and slide the seats up, with a bed platform you can sleep in it. BUT its less concern in a full size of course.

the rear bench (bottom) is real easy to remove. the last time i slept in mine, i just laid it on top until morning. but of course i was alone too.

I think the Frontrunner interior shelf is great because no one can se what I have in the trunk and I can put stuff on it so I can sleep underneath and it makes a great table infront of me for movie watching
