There are no pictures here. I did not even think about documenting my shame and possibly my demise!

Shall I tell the extent of my stupidity here?

This is not a rhetorical question here. I just wanted to know if anyone wants to know how seriously I messed up in this situation. THIS was one of those "Coming To Jesus " moments in my life!
Let'er rip!
Reading about your stupidity is much better than doing what I'm suppose to be doing at work.

Oh yes please do. These stories usually make others feel good about themselves.

Given the spending money on beer I bet it is good.

I am out of fuel on the side of the highway, in the HOT sun and temps over 100 F...with absolutely no cover!
I sure could have used that cold IPA right about then! ( To be clear I do know better than to drink alcohol when there is a threat of dehydration to heat exhaustion)

But.........

As I am sitting there on the side of the road thinking about how ignorant I was I figured the best thing to do would be to take off my helmet and my jacket and grab a drink of water while I sorted this out.
Reaching into my backpack I pulled out my 1.5L Nalgene bottle. Just then, panic hit me!
"Oh F*(K " !!! I had about 4 ounces in the bottom of the bottle and nothing else to drink!

I could have called roadside assistance had I not been so broke that I had to get liability only!
Now I was stuck on the side of the road with a little cash in my pocket not a gas station or any other building in site.

And... I was off! Running Highway 95 at 80 letting the wind cool me off. All was good until....

A vehicle trying to pass a line of cars behind a semi was flying towards me IN MY LANE !

He was not going to stop obviously and nobody was letting him in. We were going to collide no matter how hard I hit the brakes! So, at probably 60 or so by the time I got slowed, I aimed for the ditch.

To this day I have no idea how I kept that bike upright but I came to a stop and slowly toppled over when I Gould not reach the ground on the dismount.

There I was, stuck on the side of the road again in the heat of the desert. Amazingly unscathed but still out of water!

I wrestled the loaded pig back on two wheels , found a rock to set under the stand and took a deep sigh of relief. After checking things out I was absolutely thrilled that there was no visible damage! I mounted the bike and got ready to try it again.
A turn of the key. A push of the button. Oops! Gitta move the kill switch back into run position. A push of the button again and....
Nothing!

I had blown a fuse in the fuel pump. Guess what. I had a spare!
Tried again and I blew that one too!
Finally I looked for a fuse I did not NEED to use instead. I can always replace it in town. The power windscreen would not be necessary. Its gonna be fine!

Nope! That blew too. It was blowing because BMW had designed it to blow if the fuel pump gets too hot and without fuel in the tank that is exactly what was happening.

And so I sat, on the side of that desert highway with no gas, no fuses and no water, in the blistering sun. I could not escape my ignorance! I was going to suffer a while to wake up.

I called my friend to let her know that I was stuck and would obviously be late. She laughed at me and said, "You? You are always so prepared." I usually am actually, so this was very out of character. She called a tow truck and paid for it on the card. She was making sure I was rolling to that wedding!

I forgot to include my 6 hour waiting in the desert heat for a tow truck experience. Since my dumb self did not have water all I could do was use my jacket and the bike as a makeshift lean-to to shade me from the sun and lay on top of my bags to get off the hot ground. I was in no danger really, but it was that very uncomfortable experience which made me wake up and start paying attention! By the time the driver got there I was over it. He had seen this before and came prepared. The very first thing he did was bring me two ice cold bottles of water.

I was not looking forward to riding in Vegas! My hand was already sore from the little "Ditch Dive" back on 95. I was worried I could not work the clutch effectively in traffic. I was pleasantly surprised as I was able to handle it without worry.
After parking the bike at her aunt's place and spending the night on the floor, ( my sleeping pad was better than the sofa) we got up at the butt crack of dawn and headed to Seattle.

These are some of the things we got to see along the way.IMG_0521.jpegIMG_0523.jpegIMG_0525.jpegIMG_0526.jpeg

MSR makes one liter fuel cans for camping. I always carried a couple on my two wheeled road trips

On a budget though, a one or two gallon gas can is cleap and easy to strap to the back seat. Just don't fill it all the way, the fuel will need room to expand in the sun. You can also cover it in a towel to keep the heat down.

Lastly, some of the 1L juice jugs are pretty beefy and great for carrying water.
