MT/R Update-

Went out today to give the new 37's some testing. It was an interesting day. I locked in the hubs on the bridge just off the freeway...the MT/Rs DO NOT like compact snow. It was a little disconcerting:

Came across a stolen and burned out car (I didn't investigate, but it looked like a mid 80's Volvo 240 sedan).

I followed some snow machine tracks, but I was the only wheeled vehicle to be through there:

No way I could fit underneath it without using a LOT of exo to push under it; as precarious as it looked I didn't want to risk it:

I was running 25 psi in the tires and they cleaned out really well, but I don't have much to report on the actual performance in the snow until I get some beadlocks and air 'em down:

My turn around spot:

Whoops. Got a little FUBAR here, had to winch myself out. This was complicated by the fact that my Warn XD9000i stopped working. It would only spool OUT...not much good for me. I was able to MacGyver up a solution, though, by looping a little synthetic cable under itself and reversing the direction on the drum. Now my OUT only winch was pullng cable in. It was a tense moment, however:

Heading back out:

I went over to the East side of Tinkham road and was plowing totally fresh snow. Luckily it was cooperating and compacting nicely:

About 3/4 of a mile in I hit this:

Turned around with minimal issues. I can't over emphasize the usefulness of the selectable rear locker in that situation:

Airing up and enjoying lunch 4 Liter cooking at its finest:

You mean to tell us that you've got this kick @$$ rig and you're not running beadlocks? What has this world come to?!!! ;)

Well done!! I love my MTR's.

Go down to at least 10-12 PSI and you will love them even more in the snow! When we have snow, and it stays on the ground for a couple of days, I will run 15 (not the highway mind you) on the street. My norm is 12 offroad.

Giddy-up!

Nice write up. Glad the tires seemed to get you around. Tough luck on that winch though....:snorkel:

Where are that you're getting that much snow though??

I am happy to see that we are not the only ones still with snow. I was starting to get a little depressed seeing rig’s with their tops off and having fun in the sun when it is snowing outside.

x2...where are you! I would love to be in that much snow...Id be right behind you if I could keep up.

Also, what kind of fenders are you running? Look tubish and solid as helio!

Incredible pics by the way!!! Thanks!

Our snow as well as the ice is gone as well where I live. Cool ride. Love the tires. Hope you get your winch fixed soon.:smiley_drive:

Shaddup! I talked to Walker Evans and supposedly they're being x-rayed as we speak. Say, can I get an advance on next month's paycheck?

Are you running the old style MT/R? If you like those, you'll love the new Kevlar MT/R; it's a lot better in every which way. As for pressure, yes I realize 25 was a little high for snow. I normally run 2-3 psi in the white stuff, but I was being lazy. ;)

These pics are about 40 minutes from my house, just outside of Seattle. We've been having a very odd winter here, to say the least. The road I was on was only about 1/4 mile off the freeway! That's the only reason I was out there in those conditions by myself; if something really went wrong I was within easy reach of help. BTW, never attempt this at home, kids.

Flares are custom tube flares, and yes, very solid. They've saved many a panes of glass.

Thanks for all the compliments guys.

What has changed? 'Better in every which way' is a hard thing for me to believe. Is road noise comparable to the old ones? How about wear? Are the sidewalls as tough, or tougher? Do they sorta half-assed work in mud now?

Just wondering, I ran the old MT/Rs on my MJ and I have a set of them on my tow rig/daily cummins dodge pile'o'crap thinger. I was probably going to get another set for my XJ when the time came.

Why is that hard to believe? The old MT/R is ten years old...a lot of new technology has come out since then.

They claim a lifetime slightly longer than the old MT/R. 35% inclrease in sidewall strength due to the Kevlar sidewall ply, much stickier in rocks (I saw this firsthand), very composed and quiet on the freeway and their performance in the mud was astounding, something the old MT/Rs were terrible at. They spent a lot of time addressing this at the release; they heard people complain about the mud performance (myself included) and did a lot to fix it, hence the massive voids and big lugs.

You have to think, a company as big as Goodyear isn't just going to flush away a tire that has been so popular in the sector and replace it with something new for kicks. I could get into the work GY did with Sandia National Labs (the folks who build our nuclear weapons) on computer modeling, but I don't have enough internet.

If you are dead set on a set of old-style MT/Rs, you'd better hurry because the factories have completely switched over now. They're not building any more. Give the new ones a try; if you liked the old ones you'll LOVE the new ones.
