Discovery I Camel Trophy?

Just here...
My sisters buying about 100 acres in Colorado and I live in Va so I am looking to build a good off road expo/ camping/ mountain bike trail shuttle that can get me in and out of muddy woodsy stuff. A lot of what I see on here is out west desert rocky stuff which is far and away from whats available here. So, Ive always loved the first gen Discos and have found a Camel Trophy for sale. Is this legit? If so, what makes it special? It has an expo rack and a front winch bumper, rear cage/ dog guard, limb lifters and rear drawers. It also has about 180k miles on the 3.9/ auto combination so Im looking at a new motor. So, the big question is, is this a legit special edition?

Also, this would be a second vehicle so it wouldnt be driven all the time but would have to be pretty reliable. I read/ hear horror stories about Land Rover quality/ reliability/ maintenance costs. Are these true? Im looking at a series one Disco so Im hoping electro stuff wont be too scary... Thanks guys!

Is that the truck sitting on a car lot in NoVa? If so, it's a fake.

It is. I emailed them about some info on its history but havent gotten any response. So, a Camel Trophy Disco is a real thing then? How is this one a fake?

I don't think LR ever made a Camel 'special edition'. The XDs were as close as they got, and they were very different. Some people have made their own CT duplicates. Nathan from Pangaea did:

Some people have genuine CT trucks (may be as many as 12 in North America, both 110s and D1s). If it is a V8 and an auto then it isn't legit. All the Camel trucks were diesel and manual.

I think that's the old Pangea truck, built to resemble a CT. It's been for sale for at least a year in NOVA.

Where is the link to that disco pictured above? Any details on that truck? Looks awesome.

It's on autotrader. Search for a 95 Disco within 50 miles of 22204 and it'll pop up. Carfax says that's it's originally from Colorado and has been through 6 different owners. It also has 180000 miles on it with no history of service really and definitely the original motor. Stack on top of that the fact that they want 7800 bucks, I'll pass. It does look pretty beefy though. If it were like 3k, as it should be with no history and that high mileage on an original running gear, that's too much.

That truck has been languishing around here for awhile-there has been some threads on D90 and Dweb about it as well. As you pointed out, the price is significant for what you get out of it with the miles and such taken into account.

Getting to the essence of your questions-are D1's 'reliable' and 'dependable'? Depends on how you define that. I've had a 94 5 speed and currently have a 98 auto and I love them both, but it's definitely a labor of love. That does not-in my book-make them either unreliable or undependable. My 94 was on a rollback once, when I grenaded the 144k original clutch (I would call that operator driven failure) and my 98 hasn't at all (even amidst her previous engine slipping a cylinder). If you learn the truck and take care of her, she'll take care of you.

Drop a line since you and I appear to be in the same zip code, there's a pretty good crew of Rover owners up here and you can take a look at a full range of trucks in the D90/110/RRC/D1/D2 range.

I just did some reading on Pangeas website. Pretty interesting build. The trucks been all over and hasn't lived the easiest of lives it looks. It does have a 4.6 in it put in it however many miles ago and the same with the auto trans being replaced however many miles ago. Maybe they'll chime in and drop some information on it.

Ray, I live and work here in Arlington and am thinking about getting, and building, a Rover as a daily driver. This D1 has caught my eye as well as a diesel powered Defender that I am inquiring about but am afraid that it's already sold. I have always had an offroad vehicle of some sort and being a mountain biker, want to bold something that'll get me beyond the average trail heads and into some good stuff. It'll also have to get me to Colorado where my sisters land is for some biking/ camping in the woods. There are a few serious Rovers I have seen. Guy down my street has a tdi 110 that's pretty awesome and then there's a lifted Disco close by too. Haven't made my way by to introduce and talk but mght soon. Just sold my daily so I can get into something a little more rugged, whether it be a Rover or something else.

Just so there is no confusion, all the pics in this thread are of the same truck! :) So no, that is not a Camel truck, but the replica built by Nathan of Pangaea.

I can confirm, that's definitely my old Discovery. I'd be happy to answer any questions that anyone has about the truck... up until the point that I sold it about 2 years ago.

Anyone that has any specific questions is more than welcome to either PM me or shoot me an e-mail offline at nathanhindman at gmail dot com.

Somewhere in my office, I've got a detailed log book of the service that was done to it and I'd be more than happy to send to any prospective buyer. In the meantime, a couple of key points:

1. It is NOT a Camel Trophy vehicle. It does have the same paint color (sandglow), but it retains very few of the other CT specs at this point.

2. The engine in it (as of the time that I was sold it) was a 4.6L V8 out of an 03 DII. The intake manifold was from the original 3.9. It was installed around at around 150k if I remember correctly, so it should still be fairly fresh if the actual odometer is at 180k

3. The roof rack was custom fabricated. The open back was designed for a roof top tent (it should also have the mounting tabs for a 1200 Eezi Awn). Someone removed that along the way, and I think it looks a little goofy w/o the rack. There are also mounting brackets on the DS for an awning, which one of the owners must have also pirated off it.

If you can get them to come down off the price it might well be a good truck since you know it's well maintained up to when they got rid of it. I can say that the 4.6 is a very nice upgrade to the power of the truck, I just had a built motor put in mine a few weeks ago.

I shot you a pm, given that you live/work here and the zip code similarity, there is a strong possibility that the 110 TDI you're talking about is my buddy Tony-and if the Disco you're talking about is green with a roof rack and a bunch of other stuff (and is frequently parked outside the 110's house) then it may well be mine. We should get together!
