off road lights

With the Canadian dollar doing so good I'm thinking about getting 4 lights to put up on the roof of the liberty (possibly 2 but prefer 4). Just looking for opinions on lights and if anyone knows where to order from online. Looking to spend about $150US

for the money, you cant go wrong with a pair of hella 500ff or 700ff. easy to convert to HID, great beam patterns, reliable, etc.

personally i run a pair of kc daylighters up top. the pencil beam works great as a high hi-beam for offroad use only (over 42" high must be covered on the road here) in the bumper are a pair of PIAA fogs, and hopefully soon ill have a set or two of lightforces on the bumper!

You planning to go fast or slow? 500 series for slow you can get 4 for that price. You will be happy till you get a real light. :ylsmoke:

For going fast expect to pay about $100 each for the lower end Halogens. Black Magics are actually Ralley1000's Eurobeams (use to be top of the heap back in the day) and you can get into a set for around $230.

I do all my wheeling in the day and these will be on my liberty which isn't my wheeling vehicle (camping and some fire roads etc). Pretty much I want the lights for two reasons, setting up camp in the dark and highway driving on the crappy highways at 3am when I do the 12hour drive back home (usually drive through the night). I know they are illegal but its pretty common practice to use offroad lights as there is very little vehicle traffic, especailly at night.

Another option I was thinking about is no name lights. I found these on kijiji but don't know if they are going to be complete garbage or not.

I use KC Dayliters. 385,000 candle power each at 150 watts. Never had them fail yet in 7 yrs.

i used to run nothing but hella4000s but with the jeep i decided to try out the HIDX 7" round HID lights. so far ive been happy with them. Good beam pattern, powerful, and pretty sturdy. I paid about $100 each. They also have a smaller 4" round HID light.

dont buy no name lights. the lenses and reflectors are a joke.

i think whatever you put on for driving should be on the bumper. driving on the road with the top lights on is not advised, at least in my opinion. if you want area lights for camping and such, attach some to the side of your roof rack.

I'm running a stock liberty bumper so it is a real pain to mount them on the bumper. Why is the roof not a good idea?

here at least, you must keep them covered on the road.

so even if you know its an empty road and you take the covers and turn them on, if you forget to recover later, thats a ticket (now not all cops will give you a ticket for it, but it only takes once, and its illegal for a reason)

plus you may get lots of glare on the hood, on even a good road they bounce like crazy on my roof rack. lights that are lower than your eye show better on the terrain and you can see bumps and dips easier (you can see the shadow created) so you have a better idea of whats ahead, not just a bright, but flattened picture of whats ahead.

again, this is my personal opinion and experience.

you might look at Hella Optilux 4" hids. 35 watt rating, you won't need 4.
