Real opinions about the Liberty...

Viggen

Just here...
So, the lease on my 09 Outback has about a year left in it and I am starting to weigh my options for my next vehicle. Im an avid cyclist and need the interior room for all the related crap I need (both mountain and TT racing) and am starting to look more seriously into expanding my back country exploring with more difficult off road driving and camping. Ive done a lot with my Outback but I look at some of these Adventure reports and a lot of the ones that appeal to me and make me drool are beyond the capabilities of a wagon.

So, with that being said, I began thinking about what vehicle to get next. I have a pretty short vehicle attention span but I chock that up to never really getting a vehicle that can meet ALL of my needs. The closest so far has been the Outback. I would love something with the room of the Outback, more capability and build options but (!) keep the mpg the Outback affords. The only way I can do that is by going the diesel route. I test drove a 6MT XTerra Off Road package and the dealer was very keen to knock off quite a bit off the price tag but I can not relegate myself to the 15 mpg club again (truck history: 1991 Isuzu Rodeo with 3" lift and 33's, 1990 XJ on 33's with 4.7 I6, 1998 Ford Explorer on 31's).

As you know, there really arent too many options available in diesel guise. Theres older, harder to find but still desirable options like the G Wagen ($$$), an H/BJ in some form ($$$), then modern examples like the Grand Cherokee ($$$ with higher mileage) and the Liberty which can be gotten with reasonable mileage and not too outrageous in the price department. The only other option is to build my own vehicle which is not out of the question but there again, the USDM hits again with not very many diesels available to us (and NO, the 4BT is not an option as I dont want 800 lbs hanging off the front end).

So, the CRD Liberty is becoming more and more of an attractive option. Ive read great things about the motor, iffy things about the transmission, transfer case is good (same as NP 231 in XJ?), okay things about the rear end and okay things about the front. My GF used to have a Liberty 3.7 and I fit pretty well behind the wheel (6'4") and know what they are like inside, room wise. I guess what I am looking for are some owners opinions. I have peppered randomly throughout various threads in pursuit of answers. The aftermarket is pretty good with a couple of lift options to clear 32's, bumpers, etc... available but what is it like to own and live with one over long trips. Any drawbacks? Any advantages, besides the motor? My GF hated hers but it truly led a hard life. Example, they cursed it for having crappy headlights claiming they were criminally dim. Upon inspection, they had been driving with only the passenger side as the drivers side was out.

So, hit me with some opinions! Thanks.

Automotive ADHD is fun!
I loved driving around in the Liberty. I think it is a very comfortable, capable compromise between car and truck. It is pretty small, and you will notice the short wheelbase and tallness (I guess that's a word) on twisty roads. It is surprisingly capable offroad, as long as you are not expecting a rock crawler.

I wasn't too impressed with the MPG of the gasser I drove - I averaged 17 over 2 tanks.

I've had mine for three and a half years now, and I love it. It drives well and is very good on winding English and European country lanes and on motorways. I find it to be comfortable and my wife also loves it!

My brother-in-law has borrowed it twice to take touring with family, and also loves it. If it were not that he is stationed overseas for 9 months of the year, he would buy one himself.

It is pretty good off road with decent tyres( I fitted General Grabber At2s), and is very manouevreable, and although ground clearance can be a problem, it helps if you're careful with your path selection:) You can't do much lifting as the cv angles restrict you to about 2 - 2.5 inches or so. Many people go for OME springs and shocks, and TJM also do their XGS shocks and springs for it. A lot of the Aussie guys like the TJM, but you won't go wrong either way. I'm planning on fitting the TJM set when the OEM finally gives up the ghost!

Because of the ground clearance issue though, you may want to fit underbody protection - especially to look after the oil filter, which sticks down a bit - I fitted Skid Row plates, but have a look on L.O.S.T to get other's opinions, or pm Tommudd - he is a real authority on the KJ generally.

Another mod which has an excellent writeup, is the ECU reflash by Green Diesel Engineering. This offers noticeable improvements to the mpg and also to the general engine performance characteristics. I've never read of anyone who has had this tune say anything bad about it - its' praises are sung loudly! I'm planning on this mod when I get back into work and can afford it:D Currently, I'm averaging 9.2 litres per 100km with mixed back road/motorway driving.

Any vehicle has it's strong and weak points, and what one man loves, another may hate, but overall, this is a vehicle I plan on keeping until it falls apart/blows up/is stolen or otherwise destroyed!

I think the Libby is a perfectly fine vehicle from a technical point of view.

I could never get past the look of the KJ. The styling is trying too hard with the round headlights. I like the look of the KK.

Buy a clean CRD Liberty and throw a Dana 30 under the front end then you could stuff some 265/75/16 in there. Maybe an Aussie locker in the rear, I should think that would be a very capable rig.

As a longtime Toyota fan, I just purchased a Liberty CRD less than a week ago. Overall, they are good rigs. The engine is very good, but there are a couple issues which have aftermarket/do it yourself fixes. Below are the two main issues from my research-

1)torque converter can be problematic. DC is now making the Euro model available, which is less than a Suncoast. Both are great from the feedback I have read
2)EGR- this is a mess in stock form. Quick solution is to unplug the MAF. There is an off-road mod that is a DIY mod that bypasses this. Cleaning the sensor is key, along with the intake

I dont plan on getting a TC until the warranty is out and/or I need it. The EGR is something I am going to address. As far as room, I am 6'3" and fit ok. It's not as much leg room as other rigs I have owned, but certainly doable for long trips.

Another key point is to see who in you area/region works on these. Find someone(dealer or independent) who knows these well. Dont take it to the Jeep dealership unless you know there is a properly trained mechanic. Ideally, it's a Cummins/Jeep dealership.

I suggest looking over at CRD section of lostkjs for a lot of great info, as well as Green Diesel Engineering which reprograms the ECU. This is another mod I will be doing. PM me if you have specific questions.

I bought a 2002 Liberty gasser on July 4th, 2001. We put about 60K miles on it in 3 years and then replaced it with a WJ Grand Cherokee.

I liked the engine/gearing and the maneuverability. The biggest problem we had was the transmission. It went into Limp-Mode with just 500 miles on it. The dealer had it for 2 weeks to repair and we never had another problem with the trans.

The only lasting problem we had was a bad vibration at 80mph. I had the tires rotated and balanced several times to remedy it to no avail. The dealer wouldn't even look at it for the problem. (They said they couldn't duplicate the problem as they were "unwilling" to break the law by driving so fast). I don't drive that fast normally but every long trip we took reminded us to slow down. Bummer.

The Grand we replaced it with now has over 160,000 miles, gets the same mileage as the Liberty, has more room and power, and we love it. That said, I would love to have a CRD Liberty.

I rented one for a week or so once....did a fair amount of freeway driving through the California desert with it but not much off-road (a little off paved road driving).

It's rather small, somewhat underpowered (I was in a gasser, not sure what the engine was), and tended to get blown around by semis on the freeway that passed us. The amount of space in back of the rear seat was pretty darned small. The AC was marginal in performance (and since the vehicle had less than 10K miles on it, was probably at factory specs). Mileage wasn't anything worth noting. Fit and finish was only fair, and something (from a piece of weatherstripping or something) marked up a very expensive hand made linen shirt of mine, that couldn't be removed by professional cleaners :(
Off road handling was nominal, at least on the washboard desert roads we were on.

Definitely lurk over on LOSTKJS.com and JEEPKJ.com

I've had an '02 gasser for 7 years, 118K. DD with lots of 'wheeling in between. It has served me well.

I'd love to have that CRD engine. I know a few guys with it. However, it'll frag your front and/or rear diff if you get on it and the wheels are stuck. Lot's O torque!

The biggest downside from an expedition style rig standpoint is storage space. But with excellent towing capacity it'll tow a hefty trailer...

Ask any questions you may have.

A Liberty is fine... gets the kids to soccer everytime... :bike_rider: :REOutIceFishing:

Just Kidding! The Libby has some nice creature comforts. Very nice on road manners. Not very powerful. Buddy of mine was running a liberty with airbags on the rear, and 33's. I was stunned at how much stuff it went through. You can take it out to dinner after a bush run!

I have a 04 Liberty sport that has 122,000 miles and I have had no issues with it. It has been good on and off road. Check out the L.O.S.T site. Lots of great info there.:smiley_drive:
