Project Land Yacht! Full size Dodge Diesel 4 door

Hello everyone. Well Ive finally decided to build my full size Dodge into an Expedition vehicle for my the Family. Im looking at several products on the market. First is the "AT" Flippac. This to me is one of the better designs on the market. I love the simplicity and ease of camp set up with one of these. Next will be the KORE suspension system! Now tis is one of the best suspension kits I ever seen! I rode around in a full size Dodge like mine with the "Chase" series kit and man it truly is unbelievable on and off road! The ride is super smooth on rode and soaks up "Uh Ohhs" off road like they werent even there. Ride off road is also super smooth. I will be starting out with there "recon" series. Later on I hope to upgrade to the Chase series as funds permit. As far as tires I believe I will go again with the very capable Interco Trxs MT tires. I ran them on my Dodge Power Wagon and loved them. I have also run the Goodyear Wrangler MT/Rs with Kevlar on my work truck and find them excellent as well. As far as the rear bed area I have a ton of room to build just about anything I need. I love how Viking Vince has built up his Toyotas rear bed to fit his needs and flippac. I dont need my trucks bed for hauling anything so I can build it up and not worry about the space lost for other duties. I have plenty of trailers for those needs. Anyway theres the beginning. Please feel free to throw out ideas!

As a very happy Dodge full-size owner, I fully support the land yacht aesthetic. That's my license plate in the photo above.

Here's a very different source of inspiration:

Heres the new spare I had left over from one of my other projects. Of course this shows no lift but you get the idea.

Congrats on starting your 3500 Expo build. I have a 2500 that I've been slowly working on for a couple years and love it. I chose a four Wheel pop-up camper
for general comfort and ease of set-up (I'm not a kid), also have the Kore Recon suspension system, and a full set of Power Wagon skids, including the steering stabilizer skid. I'm on my second set of Toyo MT's and think they're great tires. You might give them a look-see.

Good luck and have fun..

I have not tried the Toyos yet. I havent decided just yet what tires but since I have a new 37x12.0x17 already mounted on one of my 4 extra aluminum Dodge rims I thought I might save a few hundred bucks. But again I havent decided. I did like the Intercos though. excellent in mud and all around great traction tire. I have a few questions for you about your build but will check out your build thread first. Im sure most questions will be answered there. I also love the 4wheel pop top campers. I have ever since I goit hooked on the Turtle expedition articles. But they went way out of my budget with there F550 builds ect.

I'm in Gardnerville. I like Ely; last time I was there was about a year ago.

Tell us some more about your plans for the truck.

I love Gardnerville! Nice place. I use to live in Reno years ago when it really was the Biggest "Little" city! Now its just BIG.

As far as other plans for my build? Wow there are allot! I like to build stuff with my own hands but my shop is no more and my shop tools now belong to my brother. I have my basic hand tools and such. For my Bumpers I will hand that off to Wayne Hanson. Wayne was the originator of the after market bumper that wasnt Junk! Currie contracted him to build there first bumper which was of his design. But Wayne was and still is a custom fab shop that he does pretty much by himself and they wanted more production. Anyway you can also see his work on one of the Turtle expedition trucks. I believe it was called the weekend warrior? It was the Blue Dakota. In the credits I believe Turtle gave the credit to ARB for the bumper. That couldnt be farther from the truth. I saw that bumper in his shop and after it was I beieve Powder coated that beautiful Blue. Anyway take that Bumper and enlarge it for my full size Dodge and thats what it will look like. There rear bumper I have designed but will let Wayne have his way with it. Either way it will be done right. I am thinking about 2 spare tires with one side holding the sand matts behind the tire and the other side holding a Hi Lift, Shuvel and axe behind the other. All of my Shackles (4) on back will be the larger ones. Not your typical 3/4 Shackles found on just about every expedition rig. The reason is this vehicle will need the larger recovery straps (4") and thus the eye lets or end loops are much thicker. Have you ever tried hooking 2 of these eye lets on a 3/4 shackle? Pain in the ******** especailly when its below zero and your hands arent responding very well. Been there done that. I have some rough scetches I can post. And I mean rough.....

The front bumper will house an industrial Warn 15K winch. The rear will be kept empty. I have several 9K portable Warn winches but I dont plan on going anywhere I need to get yanked out.... Famous last word right. Anyway a front mounted winch should suffice.

Any true Expedition Rig should have the ability to produce its own air. I have decided on a Viar dual compressor system and remote tank to fill that need. Maybe a custom box under the bed with access from the side of the bed with a door might work. I havent figured that out yet since I really havent focused on that part of my build. Other niceties will include a remote shower and sink. Side Table to mount on the bed when in camp and a nice Awning. I will also carry some nice rugs that will stow in the bed area when on the move and then unrolled and layed out like a bedouin tent floor. I did this once with some old rugs we had and man does it keep the dirt out of you tent and everything else for that matter! Plus the dust is kept down as well. For beaches its a must!

A crew cab long bed is definately a big truck and fun to drive on challeging roads, I have since sold mine but the looks I got on some trails made it fun. Good luck on the build

Thanks Bat. I have taken it in stock form on some medium trails which were a bit challenging with the stock tires and open front diff with a limited rear. I keep almost 700 pounds of sand bags in the back. This helps keep it under control on wash boards and the like. Cant wait to get the Kore suspension package installed and some decent 35" inch meats on her shoes.

Ok I had to look up where the heck Ely was. HWY50 - the loneliest road in america lol. thats funny stuff. Funny the photos I found in google earth for ely (who posts up pictures of the strip club???) looks nice surrounded by mountains though.

Hey outback I did want to point out a few things with tire selection. While saving a few hundred might be nice, the interco tires are not very good pavement tires. IMO in the end your gonna hate them, specially on a big truck. The toyo MT's are great on and off road. My father actually got 50,000 out of them on his F250 (comparing for full size) and I am well on my way to 50,000 on my toyos on my toyota 4runner.
