Basin and Range – Nevada September 2010

Scott: Great report! You've got me itching to get back there and heck, I passed through that area just six months ago (March.)

How did you hear about Heizer's "City?" I first read about it in a great book called "The Void, The Grid, and The Sign" by William Fox

http://www.amazon.com/Void-Grid-Sig...6182/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1317046810&sr=8-1

As soon as I read about it, I knew I had to try and see it. On my way out to Death Valley in March I drove up that way. Couldn't get past the locked gate, of course, but I did go up to the top of one of the bluffs to the South and took some photos.

Unfortunately, I discovered that late March is still very "Winter-y" in that part of Nevada. It was extremely cold and windy and so instead of spending the night in Central NV, I decided to make a beeline to Death Valley so I could get to some lower - i.e. warmer - elevations.

You've really whetted my appetite, though. Love the hot springs, too.

Speaking of which, is there a web site that has a list of accessible "primitive" hot springs in NV? I'd love to do another "spring-hopping" trip across the great basin like I did (with other ExPo folks) in 2009.

Excellent trip report, I've covered some of those areas in my travels before, particularly the Pony Express Trail from SLC to Reno. The silt beds west of Cherry Creek were un-real, half our group got stuck fighting them, thankfully I was out front and had a clean run, I think some of the others are still cleaning the silt out of their trucks :D

Hope you don't mind, I'm going to share this link with the ExpeditionNevada folks
"Pony Express Trail from SLC to Reno"?! I've done a small section and have been wanting to do more. Did you do a trip write up for that?

Excellent report! I happen to live in Ely Nevada and have been to Cathedral Canyon many times. Some years you can only walk through it. Next time you plan a trip drop me a pm and I will tell you of a few other "must vist" areas in the area. We are currently moving to Prescott AZ but will still have a home in Ely. Excellent report.

Nope, nothing we really spent time documenting. We spent 5 days and followed as much as the true PET as we could from SLC to South Lake Tahoe, obviously we were on the pavement close to Reno, etc but we did our best and visited as many sites as we could along the way. You can read more on the actual PET including the route here: http://www.expeditionutah.com/featured-trails/pony-express-trail/

Share away--that's why I put these reports together! Who/What are the ExpeditionNevada folks?

I first learned about Heizer while in architecture school in the late 80s, that's when we first visited Double Negative.

I should have mentioned Hot Springs in the intro. There's Soakers Forum, Hot Springs Enthusiast, and SoakNet, but we've always relied on the very funky Hot Springs and Hot Pools series and a couple other paperback guides.
:snorkel:

I've had the Fox book in my Wish List folder on Amazon forever; maybe it's time to pull the trigger.

ExpeditionNevada is a partner site of (and currently hosted by) ExpeditionUtah.com
Both sites are simple, trip reports, route intel and route history information, by members for members. Its by no means meant to compete with ExPo in fact if anything it complements it. ExpNV, ExpUt, etc don't have tech, chat, classifieds or any of that fun stuff... just route intel. Check it out if you get a minute.

Loved your report...I used the pics in this thread to show my students as aids-we have been discussing the 3 geographic regions of Utah (Basin and Range, Colorado Plateau, and the Rocky Mtns.)

Just where I'm looking to go!

echo29,

Many thanks for the write up, pics, and video. Parts of your drive overlap with my developing thoughts for a Rogerson, ID to Golconda, NV traverse. Specifically, I'm looking to leave Jarbidge to the north, go over the dividing range to the Bruneau Canyon, thence south (upstream along Meadow Creek Road), to Sunflower Flat, thence west + north to Merritt Mountain, a mostly drive-up summit of 8,500'. At present, my only planning map resource is Benchmark's Nevada atlas, on which I followed most of your route from the Arnold Loop to Tuscarora.

I'm having a bit of trouble figuring out your Day 12 Wikiup Canyon route and FS Road 246 to the west. Was that by chance Rowland and/or Mink Ranch, within 3-4 miles of each other on the Bruneau? Similarly, I am not 100% on where the Elephant Butte campsite overlooking Buckhorn Ridge was. I see Wrangle Mtn and Lime Creek, but no Jim Bob Creek. Likely the latter is an unnamed tributary (on the Benchmark) draining to the north-northwest, I'm guessing.

I suppose you intersected the Rogerson-Jarbidge Rd just inside Idaho, at Murphy Hot Springs International Airport, then descended into the East Fork of the Jarbidge canyon, following it past the hot spring settlement before turning southwest upstream on the main fork to Jarbidge. Is that correct?

I certainly don't want to over-tread you exact route, rather it's very helpful for me to connect your excellent pictures with map locales in order to get a feel for nearby places to explore.

Great work, and thanks for any additional detail.

When all else fails..........

...........read the instructions.

Echo_29- I answered my own questions as to your route details by blowing up the Google map you so kindly place AT THE BEGINNING of your fine write-up. Looking at that in concert with my Benchmark did the trick.

I will add kudos to your team for traversing some very seriously out of the way trails. Absent this report, I would not have guessed that your route from Thousand Springs to Jackpot, from south of Jackpot to Murphy Hot Springs, and especially from Deer Creek Road into the Bruneau Canyon was even possible in a full-size rig. Even then, I rather suspect I won't be trying to wedge my F350 CrewCab longbed pickup into any of those nooks and crannies. Instead, I'll probably do some zig-zagging on the main FS roads with spurs out to and up the summits of Merritt Mountain and Porter's Peak, each pictured in your stills and videos, and each drivable on two-tracks to points very near their summits.

Thanks again for a fine and totally inspirational (and even more detailed than I originally thought!) report.

Foy
