My New (AEV) American Expedition Vehicles Jeep!!

Well, after 12 years as a die hard Land Rover Nutzoid case, ... I have landed on what I think is the best 'Modern' platform Expedition Vehicle.
I still love Land Rovers- (don't particularly care for the direction they are taking rover right now), but in all honesty, my first expedition truck was a 1998 Jeep Wrangler 2 door. My first experience in an off road truck came in my uncles 1952 Willis Jeep that we road all through the middle Georgia red clay woods!

This started on an odd move. My wife had a G4 2008 LR3 competition truck which she hated. She said it was big, lumbering, and she hated the graphics. I told her she could drive anything she wanted. She chose a 2011 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon in Natural Green. SHE LOVES IT. Then, ... I LOVED IT! The new interior is just fantastic and it is so quiet inside compared to the 1998 I once had.

Here are pics of her truck:

So, the decision was made to find me one- and I chose the 2011 Jeep Unlimited AEV #44. I found the truck at NEMER Chrysler in New York State.
The challenge, ... I wanted to be able to pull my trailer and not have a slug.
Christopher Rogers is the service manager at NEMER, but more importantly, he lives the lifestyle- going on long trips through the New England back country. He knows these trucks. He personally took on my truck build and we did front/rear E-lockers, 4 to 1 Atlas T-Case, 513 Gearing, under body protection- and much more. The truck still has a few things that I am doing to make it "work" for me, but it is fantastic! (Thanks Christopher! and Jeff at AEV for walking me through it!
The 513 gearing and ProCal are the key to this thing. It literally seems like it has twice the horsepower of my wife's Rubicon. (I know it is a mere function of ratio and synchronization, but the sensation is more H.P.)
I wanted the Sahara Tan color and was not too particular about the interior.

Warn 9000i with Viking Synthetic Line in Yellow. There are IPF's on the truck now, but the Hella 4000's are on order. I'll give these IPFs a run in the meantime to see which I end up liking better.

Swing Away Rear Tire Carrier with Light and if you look in the spare, you'll see the rear brake lamp AEV offers. AEV Shovel mount is integrated in the rear carrier and the shovel is enroute.

Got my Garmin GPSMAP478 with Nexrad weather radar.
I opted not to have the nav, but my wife has it, and it is a fantastic set up, so I may be going with that, but it is a plug-n-play system from Mopar.

It has the Freedom top which I think is fantastic. It allows the front two passengers to be in the sun, but the kids don't complain about being blown away in the back seats. Mine has the top painted to match which I think works great on my truck, but my wife's is black which she likes.

All in all- I think it is going to be a fantastic answer to my desire to have an "easy" button, which the rovers were for sure ... NOT!
The great thing- my entire family loves these two trucks. Before, I was the only one loving my rovers. It is nice to strike a balance for a change.

It is really a complex story that includes a long self analysis.
The long story short- I became obsessed with Land Rover. I totally forgot why I got involved with the Marque, and became more consumed with the truck than I was in enjoying using them.
The ONLY wedge we had (my wife and I ) as a couple was the land rover. She would comment that she might get more attention from me ... if she had a green oval tattooed to her ***!

When we purchased this last Conqueror Commander trailer- we really started going and doing again. We have spent more time camping with it in the last three months- than we did the old trailer in a years time. While traveling- my wife admitted that she hated the LR3- and wanted to replace it. Pulling the trailer with the DI was a white knuckle experience. A 20 year old truck with a 122K miles was like swimming with a great white. You just never knew. As I contemplated all this data, I was invited to the launch of the Range Rover Evoque. That pretty much drove home the fact that Land Rover has decided to really move completely away from their roots, yet if you download a 2011/12 Jeep brochure, you see that they have moved completely back to their core roots.
The decision was fueled when I was offered a very handsome price to buy everything I owned land rover in one quick deal (think removing a bandaid).
I spent a lot of time on the phone with Scott Brady and AEV before making the decision to move forward and it became apparent that the platform must be usable for you ... not you adapt to the platform.
I wanted something that truly (at my age) had an "Easy" button in it.
We that love the Land Rover marque do so with all the caveats it presents.

I was tired of that, and my wife was even more tired of it.

The bottom line- as I approach 50, I just want to get in and go. Minimal worries. No wrenching. - And as a plus, the Jeep Unlimited (4 door) with Freedom top is a tremendous platform that gives you built in roll cage, 22 air bags, a phenomenal technological package - nav, Uconnect, tunes storage, etc., and open air or hardtop benefits in one easy to convert package- and the best part- quiet inside, and no leaks!
So, call me turn coat, but when your motivation is to keep peace- you make sacrifices.

No turn coat at all....

I understand completely...
Same reason I sold my FJ40 and "built" my Tacoma for what my family enjoys.

I also like the easy button approach... out of the blue my 171,000 mile Tacoma started running rough today... luckily it appears a #5 spark plug and wire fixed in the Advance Auto, but now the idea is in my head : 0

Again congrats on all three new additions... all three are very cool!

I'll add to this- There are people on this board that are great people with no agenda. They are willing to lead, guide and direct without pushing any choice on you.
The great thing about e-mailing with Scott Brady is he is the one that pointed out: "the platform must be usable for you ... not you adapt to the platform."
He never said ... do this- or go that route. He just helped me self analyze what my needs were considering a family, the trailer, what we specifically do and were we go.

There truly are not many people anymore that go on expeditions- ... I mean ... where is there unexplored territory in the US? Maybe the Canol Road in the great white north of North America.
This didn't come down to a Land Rover verses Jeep argument. This was about functionality for our specific needs.

Thanks to Scott and the others that helped me with this process.

It's good to see you've finally come out of the closet:) The truck looks awesome, wish I could have talked Brandy into tan. I'm seriously jealous of you and Dale. Let me know how the 4000's work out. I opted for the 4000 compacts due to mounting and overall size on Brandy's 08. Would like to see the full size 4000's on an AEV bumper before I outfit her 2012.

Cheer's,
James

Hey Dendy,

Congrats. I agree about time you came out of the closet. I have seen your profile image as a Jeep for a while and was wondering when you would announce. Funny I am on my third Discovery and just gave in to the pull as well. Just picked up an 09 Unlimited. I will be making my own announcement shortly.

How do you like your new trailer by the way? Based on the above I would assume well :).

Your JEEP (can't bring myself to call a jeep a truck) is just so darned sexy. Geez. Good on ya. Your wife's is nice, but yours - well, makes me just want to pack up and go :sombrero:

Congratulations Dendy. I must say that Jeep is doing amazing work lately. I am more and more considering one in the future, especially after seeing the new Action Camper last weekend at Sema.

I am tempted to believe that the relationship between Scott/OJ/Expo/AEV and Jeep has something to do with that...

Ahhhhh another bow's to the mighty "Jeep" !!!!!! Congrats......fine looking ride!!! I had a RR Classic.....and when the drivers seat switch went.....and cost me $175 for the switch...(non returnable) and then it went on to be a seat motor....(used $150) ,,,,I had enough......
So now I drive a Jeep as well...... and I guess I should...as I have been a Chrysler Dodge Jeep Service Operations Manager for 24 years!!!
Again congrats on both your rides..... the 2011's rock...and there has been almost zero issues with them...........

Cheers

Enjoy 'em, Dendy.

Fit a beefier trans cooler to your rig for towing if you haven't already; the OE isn't adequate and it WILL overheat fast.

Other than that, when are you going to come over and camp with us? Chris/Cole are coming to our Thanksgiving in the woods near Tellico --- and Country Fried Weekend happens in January...
