Unofficial J30 Jeep JKU Pop Up Thread

After seeing the Honda Element camper top the first time, I suspected something like this might "pop up"...

I like it!!! UMV, please do share some more details like availability date. Does it utilize the opening between the roll bars over the rear seats for entry? Are you planning an attachable side and rear awning?

Very cool! Have admired the E-Camper by UM for a while as the wife's daily driver is an Element.

We also have a 2007 JK Unlimited, this looks like a great addition

Love it  Actually like it better than the Habitat. Just like to have a firm fiberglass roof over my head. Looks like it is a completely new hard top, not a modification to the factory top.

Yes!

I have been completely obsessed with this rig since i for saw it in Overland Journal, last week. Even went so far as pricing out 2012 jk rubies just to get an idea of what I'm in for. I really like the e camper and placing the concept on a JK seems brilliant. Cant wait to hear more from Ursa major, have sent several e-mails, heard nothing yet.

I don't get it. It's going to be about the same price. Half the space, at best. Once you climb up in there and put the hatch cover in place you're stuck. There isn't room to sleep with the hatch open. So if you have to get up during the night then the other person does too. Yea, you could unzip and go down a ladder, but where are you going to pack that? on a roof rack maybe. If it were half the price, then maybe. I just don't see any advantage over the habitat. And now I see why the habitat hasn't shipped....

I don't think your habitat having not shipped yet has to do with the J30. I was in e-mail contact with John yesterday regarding the J30 and he clearly stated the J30 has and is taking a back seat over the Habitat, that the Habitats have priority.

Habitat vs J30 is about the same as the discussion hard shell Roof Top Tents like the Maggiolina I am using for the last 10 years vs a conventional RTT like the Eezy Awn, Howling Moon or others. Having camped extensively in areas with foul weather, nothing beats for me a Westy-type solid roof with breathable walls. I don't have the need for a 2 room apartment  on top of my Jeep. Huge canvas sides in high winds and a cloth between me and the rainy sky just does not make me feel warm and fuzzy. But that's just me. Looking at the RTT landscape, conventional RTTs outnumbering the clam shell RTT probably about 5:1, I would imagine that most people like you would prefer the roomier Habitat. For me, the J30 is/will be just perfect :)

choices

For me, the J30 is/will be just perfect :)

That's why they are making both. We all have different taste, and another choice to make. "2 room apartment" :Wow1: I like...
Just out of curiosity; Do you go alone or with a companion? It's the climbing down through the hole that I mostly object to. I have to get up almost evry night.:snorkel:
The hard top is a plus. I bet one will hear the rain more than a tent. But living in the desert that's a real treat.

Mostly with my favorite travel partner, my wife.

Yup, me too I normally have to schedule a pit stop mid night (or two, if the beer has been plentiful :sombrero:), but making the decision to get out of the warm sleeping bag is by far the most difficult part of the task  Once the decision is made that there is no way around following nature's call, getting down the ladder is no problem. I guess getting down the hatch will not be more difficult.

I hate to sound vulgar, but as a teen teaching outward bound winter survival as an eagle project, I learned the joys of a pee bottle. Still use it to this day. Sorry ladies.

Great Popped-Up Idea UMV Gents!
So when do I have to forget about looking online for a roof rack and additional RTT for my JKU?
I'll thicken the queue just let me know how many USD figures should I grab out of pocket for
and
when you'll switch from prototype to the marketable product for the JKU?!
Let's start the FAQ:
- What is the weight a J30 JK Pop-up can hold?
- A J30 JK pop-up version for the short JK is in sight?
:coffee:
Nice looking pop-up!
Cheers
John

Carrying a roof load is the big advantage I see in this over the Habitat. Specifically a canoe or a pair of kayaks. With just 2 of us and the dog, there'd be plenty of room, but I think it'd be a tough go with a kid.
Has anyone figured out how to carry stuff like kayaks on the Haitat w/o having to unload everything?
