    pivoting frames and mounting campers

So I swapped to a rear pivot. Huge difference. Camper moves around way less. Doesn't flop to the downhill side so hard off camber. But still keeps the torque out of the camper. I don't have shocks installed and don't think I will this time. I did it quick and dirty with another rigid fixed...

    pivoting frames and mounting campers

My camper is pretty light at about 1200# fully loaded, and I would estimate that as 800# forward, 400# rear, based on my ability to manipulate the rear end but not the front. Water and batteries are not centered up front but on opposite sides, near the edges: not ideal. My truck frame ended up...

    pivoting frames and mounting campers

My '96 F150 will jam up the doors. I've had to crawl out the window when stuck in such a situation. Was more an issue with two open diffs, but the old trucks are not great in regards to torsion. I have had my camper on a 3 point mount, front pivot with shocks, for several years now. Maybe 6...

    OBS 350 as Platform?

No doubt there's a cool factor to the older trucks. And yes they're easier to afford up front. Not too bad to work on yourself. Like stated though, there are various reasons they don't make them like they used to. I'm on a Ford specific forum and the general consensus there is to avoid these...

    OBS 350 as Platform?

My OBS is a gas truck, so it sounds like the diesel is no better. Maybe worse? I've not been stranded in 18 years of ownership.. Good to hear on the 6.2L gas. I've been thinking something like that would be a sensible upgrade for me when I'm ready. And yes, frames are definitely soft! My 3...

    OBS 350 as Platform?

If you want to avoid wrenching I'd avoid an old truck. I have an OBS Ford and I'm often fixing something on it. 341k miles, plenty of dirt, and 26 years old makes it inevitable. Worn suspension parts, fix a corroded wire here, rebuild brakes, replace brake lines, weld up a crack, faded...

Diesel heater in a four wheel camper?

I was given (friend upgraded to lithium) two Centennial 6V AGM batteries of 224 amp/hr each, so when wired in series to get 12V I'm at 224 amp/hr, but of course that's not all useable. It's charged off 200 W solar, and a 20 amp DC-DC charger from the truck. This is all newly installed, and...

Diesel heater in a four wheel camper?

That heater/stove combo is pretty slick. More than I'm willing to spend at this time but would be a nice piece. I just doubled my battery capacity, solar, and added a big inverter to go induction cooktop and ditch propane altogether.

Diesel heater in a four wheel camper?

It took a little while to settle on that setup. There's pro's and cons to it. I like that it's on the wall not taking up useful space, easily accessible/serviceable, and the combustion inlet & outlet are outside. One drawback is the heater is under the bed; so the fan is a bit loud if running...

Diesel heater in a four wheel camper?

I put one in my 1980's Fleet (flatbed converted). Ran like crap initially because I didn't adjust for my elevation (7100'+) but all good now. I wanted it to not take up any floor space. The fuel tank sits in a little cradle, with the fuel line running along the front wall of the camper...

    1982 Fleet Flatbed Conversion Project

I remembered this thread and thought I might update it. I have added a few luxury items to the camper, and improved the truck. The camper has had a 12V compressor fridge for a few years now, no issues running off the single 100 W panel. I recently installed a Chinese Diesel Heater (CDH) on the...

    Tire Options

I've had both the Falkens and the Toyo's. I thought the Falkens got the nod on ice, and the Toyo's were better in mud. But both were great tires. Toyo's were slightly louder. I liked the confidence of having three ply sidewalls on the Toyo's and would buy again. I've gone back to 15" wheels...

    Shaking at 70+ mph

Bent wheel? I just swapped out some steel wheels bc two were bent and shook pretty bad at certain speeds. They wobbled side to side as they rotated. Tire shop did their best to balance it out but said I needed new wheels to fix it. Sometimes they'd run ok, hit a bump, and it would initiate a...

Half ton of fun. Overlanding build starting for '04 F150

Yeah 4R75W trans, 4th gear is overdrive at 0.7:1. Plenty of OD to enable highway cruising with 4.10 on 33" tires. And the Triton isn't a low rpm dino either. "Never fear the gear" and all that..
