Trans America Trail: A month's journey in a 96 Jeep XJ.

Long Rifle: Glad that we could be a source of entertainment for the morning. Moogmike: This could be a great adventure for a dad/son team, as the extended amount of limited distraction time could provide great conversation opportunities. I hope to revisit this journey as my boys get older...

Trans America Trail: A month's journey in a 96 Jeep XJ.

I'm glad you guys enjoyed reading about our adventures. Don't hesitate to get out there and do it yourselves. I, like you, would have loved to do it in one shot; splitting it up was the only way for us to accomplish it with our other lives that we live. You could definitely travel...

Trans America Trail: A month's journey in a 96 Jeep XJ.

dstn2bdoa & justjoshnya: Thanks for reading. I'm glad you guys enjoyed the thread. justjoshnya: Just do some as you are able. The time factor was definitely a roadblock to me at the beginning, but splitting it up made it manageable to fit it in around my work schedule. Joe: It seems that...

Trans America Trail: A month's journey in a 96 Jeep XJ.

I think that the season and temperatures are going to be a defining characteristic for what you can and cannot do. If you are late spring, early summer then I would try for some of the lower elevation sections (Nevada, Oregon, Tennessee, Arkansas, etc.) If you go mid to late summer, then...

Thanks for the comments guys. nr1215: You're right, the photos don't do it justice, especially the sunsets over the desert. DesertXJ: Colorado, Utah, and Nevada offered some great variety of trail. You should definitely make the time to get out and travel the TAT.

I'm glad that ya'll enjoy reading the posts. We had a great time on the trail and hope that more people will be comfortable taking on longer journeys. I got to see things that I only dreamed about when reading other people's threads and also learned a lot more about my lovely travel partner (EH).

I would be interested in how someone found much public land to travel on from NYC to TN. It is probably a lot of beautiful country roads and nothing to miss out on (I would do it if for nothing other than seeing more of the country). Equipment: Water - we packed our water in 10L MSR Dromedary...

    TAT Trailer Build

I installed a Primus IQ the other day from Tekonsha. I liked the end result and it has a manual lever. Another option is the Tekonsha Voyager. It has been around longer, is reliable, and cheaper. It also has a manual lever, but the leveling is manual instead of the automatic leveling you...

Trans America Trail: A month's journey in a 96 Jeep XJ.

After reviewing pictures and the maps, I see that we followed the trail south of Black Bear Pass. We were on D65 along the Howard Fork and through Ophir. There are so many passes and canyons, that it is hard to keep track of them all. A small trailer could make most of it, but may take some...

garyhaupt & concretejungle: Thanks for reading and leaving comments. We hope that our journey helps describe a journey that is both fun and accessible to many that may think it too hard to accomplish Off-roading skill level: I grew up driving a variety of vehicles off-road, but nothing of...

JCMatthews - The undercoating was just a protective finish. The gutter mount towers clamp sufficiently to the gutter on slick paint, so clamping to undercoating works as well.
