Love my Savage 24F-12 double barrel combination rifle/shotgun. .223 on top, 12g on bottom. It's my favorite, most-used hobby weapon. The combo's were originally designed as an airman's survival gun. The stopped making them recently, but many are still out there for sale.
yes I run a CB alongside my 2m/440 ham rig. Most 4x4ers use CB, not ham radio, so it makes very good sense to keep a CB handy.
my 3 top pics for ham radio: (newer versions exist of some)
Yaesu FT-8800 2m/440, 50w, because it has 50 watts on 2m, and has a crossband repeater function (it will...
Great advice, and it's never too late to second that kind of good advice! Hand helds are second radios, not first. Period. Get a standard 50w 2m or dual band mobile unit and if/when the emergency comes, you'll be ever so thankful you did not get stuck with a highly limited .5, 1.5 or 5w hand...
Last year @ 86k miles, I put OM Emu "stock light" suspension kit on my stock '99 Tacoma V-6 xtracab 4x4. (it has stock alloy 15x7 rims and stock sized 31x10.5 BFG At/KOs) Gained 2+ inches height/travel. Lovely riding little trail truck.
Last week I replaced the worn AT/KO's with new 31x10.5...
Yes, like many others I can recommend the OME suspension kit. But choose carefully which version of the kit you get, and I highly recommend getting the complete kit, not mixing it with different shocks or springs.
I put OME full kit on my 1999 Tacoma xtracab v-6, and at advice of an ARB tech I...
I'm the original owner of my 1999 Tacoma 5 speed manual 4x4. I've never driven an auto off road. Here's some pros and cons I learned from experience and research:
manual pros:
excellent engine compression braking when going down hills
easy roll starts in dead-battery scenario
excellent gear...
I have a buddipole, but when I was operating portable I used the pictured system more often for portable HF -- in front of my truck is a Sigma GT5 vertical, band switchable dipole. Overpriced, clunky but solid construction, and easier to use when car camping than a buddipole. It breaks down...
Chiming in late.... I hear ya. l I'm a fan of BTU's for boiling water, but I have noticed over time that, water boiling aside, 90% of my cooking is low heat type stuff anyway.
Once that realization sank in, I gave up my quest for more BTUs. (and I find that my MSR heat exchanger does reduce...
It's working. I'm still asking why. I'll get hung up on it and write a book about it someday. Extinct: Discussions on The Great Cooler Shelving Mystery.
Kinda like the dinosaur debate, only relevant and practical.
It's been ages since I used a canister stove. I'm curious; how does the flame/heat out put behave as the tank gets near empty? I had a backpacker's propane/butane mix stove about 20 years ago, and it drove me nuts as the tank got low. But it did not use the bigger propane tanks these use.
Yes indeed, I agree. That was my central curiosity when starting the thread; minimalism is relative, so what are the relative observations from these different "camps"? There's been some good stuff here.
As a 4x4 car camper, the one thing that makes me swing from "bring the pizza maker and...
In the 1990s a friend of mine would take months long road trips in his NEW Honda Civic four door, which he had heavily converted to be a mini camper.
He removed all seats except for the driver's, and built a sleeping deck in the entire empty space, with below deck storage, and clip-on window...
