After getting the frame back up un the jack stands it has become obvious that there is very little torsional rigidity to this frame. Given the length of the body the sub floor would be massive in order to accommodate a 3 point system. The Silverado body and bed must have added a lot of rigidity...
Thanks Coachgeo, I have been pondering the idea. I'm thinking about keeping the passenger area fairly rigid with just the stock rubber body bushings and suspending the back 1/2 on pivots. Between the subfloor shape and a roll cage in the passenger area I'm hoping flex won't be a problem. Thanks...
Chassis is back from the Hazzard Fab!
The chassis is back from Hazzard Fabworx, 38" longer, axle is 9" wider and 14" further back. Now I will be finalizing the design for the floor so we can get the body attached to the chassis. The basic idea is to build aluminum trusses or beam assemblies to...
Yes, there will be a support above the engine, and probably behind as well. Still laying out the piping for air and coolant so available space has yet to be determined. Won't survive the first jump if I leave it like it is!
Progress report
Time for a semi-annual update, sorry about that.... Been busy with other stuff. I ran into a clearance problem with the axle shafts. Either I wrote down the info wrong or I was given bad info, either way the shock rod ends needed to be 1" longer and the lower perch needed to be...
Shocks are leaned in as far as possible, the 90* I was referring to is the front/back placement for the top mount. I did end up re-routing the hose, much better that way. Thanks for posting!
Front Suspension
Fabricating the the new towers. I have a lot of experience welding, but this is still very intimidating. It can't fail. I tested TIG and MIG welds to check penetration using Naval Jelly, it worked very good and I learned a lot. The MIG welds yielded the best consistent...
Progress Pics
We have removed the front suspension and are now building the new shock towers. The lower and upper control arms, the spindle or hub, and tie rod end are Kibbie Tech long travel. Although I don't need long travel, thats really the only way to move the hubs to their proper...
Pictures Update
Here are some more pics, I'm trying to get caught up to where we currently are on this project. The pics so far are over a year old. We started the project, then my wife found an unfinished house she had to have. Admittedly it was a great investment, however I was incredibly...
Hanging the body.
We built a supporting structure inside the body shell in order to properly lift it without causing damage. Plywood gussets attack to the 2 main ribs and a couple small ones. Cross bars keep the lower part of the body in place. From here we can roll the chassis under and start...
Oh, just so everybody knows, I haven't spent any time learning the controls on this site. Hopefully I insert comments in the appropriate locations, don't delete anybody's comments, etc. Forgive me if I do, and send pointers my way if you feel inclined. Thanks!
Silverado Strip
I built a gantry to help with disassembly of the truck, and it came in handy to remove the AC unit. Sucker was heavy.... We had the truck stripped in a weekend, loaded all the unwanted parts, and sold them back to Spaldings. We tried the auction route when it came to buying the...
