It's the transmissions, combined with cylinder deactivation. You can't put an 8-speed + cyl deact up against a 5-speed without cyl deact and expect similar results. If Toyota were to develop a rugged 8 or 10-speed transmission combined with cylinder deactivation, their numbers would go way up...
