    Kenwood Installation Cable extension question

I had some interference using a regular RJ45 coupler on the mic of my D710A. By switching over to a shielded RJ45 coupler, it got rid of the interference. I don't remember having any issue with the head cable.

Chirp with Kenwood TM-D710G on Linux +APRS

There are two DIN plugs on the radio body, for programming use the one that says PC, not DATA. DATA is for an external TNC.

    Equipment Questions

If you like the TM-281A form factor with the front facing speaker Yaesu now has something in a similar package thats dual band and includes their System Fusion digital...

    Radio in Italy

900mhz in Europe is used for cellular communications. 902 mhz ISM is in region 2 only (North, Central, and South America). You run the risk of interfering with cellular communication and could face heavy fines. Using ham radio with CEPT is an option but all users will need to be general class...

Any hams here using DMR (digital mobile radio) units?

There's a lot of fusion repeaters out there, the reason being Yaesu subsidised the crap out of them to get them installed. But the bulk of them rarely, if ever, have any Fusion traffic. Almost all of them are set up in hybrid mode which allows both fusion and analog fm. Analog users cant talk...

DStar DMR or Fusion + HF

There is a multi band multi protocol mobile radio in development, the DV4 Mobile. But dont get your hopes up. It keeps getting pushed back, and due to component sourcing issues, they've stopped taking preorders for it. If it ever comes about, it will be alot of radio, although at an estimated...

DStar DMR or Fusion + HF

Yes, the APX series does have dual (and in the case of the APX 8xxx series VHF UHF and 700/800), but they are P25 radios, not DMR. The Motorola DMR radios are the XPR series. There are amateur P25 repeaters, but not nearly as many as DMR. Believe it or not, the first dual band DMR radio has...

    General Ham license study suggestions?

I used hamtestonline for my tech and extra. It's a paid service, but I found it very good, especially for extra. I'm not sure I would have passed without it. For general, I used the ARRL manual and lots of practice tests with a friend. The general was the hardest test for me, I found it as...

Radio setup reccomendations for crossing Africa

Each country you visit will have it's own rules and regulations for amateur radio. Some places may not allow it at all, others may tie you up in red tape for years. While the ARRL info is US amateur specific, I'm sure it's going to be nearly the same for other countries as well, especially if...

    HF Radio

May be worth seeing if there are any MARS (Military Auxillary Radio Service) operators near you. Since this radio has unrestricted tx and ALE its much more desirable to MARS operators than hams. There is some ALE activity on the ham bands, but it's very limited, and no VFO and 200 channels...

    Which Verizon Hotspot?

Another vote for going with the hotspot feature on your phone, unless you need more than 4 devices at a time running. If you do, go for the Jetpack AC791L. Has a battery that lasts 24 hours, supports up to 15 simultanious devices, it's unlocked so you can use it with any carrier in the US or...

    Kenwood mic question

I have a 710 and am in the process of relocating the body further back in my vehicle. I bought a shielded cat6e cable and a shielded coupler but didn't have any luck getting the mic to work with it. I placed ferrite chokes on each end of the ethernet cable and now have no problems whatsoever.

In need of a new rig..

Look at some of the reviews of these Chinese mobile rigs. Poor receivers with bad filtering and image rejection. No service depots in the US, if you need warranty work you will have to ship it to China, thats if it even comes with a warranty the manufacturer will honor. If it was a $30...

    Just purchased a Yaesu FT-9800R,

Sure, the 8900 can be opened up to do outside of the ham bands, but by doing so, since it's not type accepted (Part 90), you put the agency's license in jeopardy. If you really need ham and Part 90 in the same unit, look at something thats type certified for both (a misnomer really as amateur...

    Easiest car to car communication?

One thing to keep in mind with MURS: They use some of the old "color dot" business band frequencies. In some areas, there are still legacy licences that have priority on those frequencies, mainly big box stores like Walmart and Target. If you CTCSS/DCS code the recieve, you may not realize...
