Unicorn on the Ocean - 1120AF Coming to Canada

Everything came back from powder coating and now I've got to be very careful not to scratch anything! Mostly reassembled, I need to sort fuel lines then it could drive again. Need a couple of custom hydraulic lines to get the winch working again before access becomes much harder with the...

    Isuzu npr 4wd

On a smaller scale I have my spare held open with gas struts. They go weak over time. Not strong enough when parked on any slight side hill. Hard to close something that's already hard enough. Get covered in grime which kills them fast. I've gone through two sets in 8 years. I would...

Unicorn on the Ocean - 1120AF Coming to Canada

Slowly slowly slowly, Chassis painted, after much degreasing. Am glad there wasn't any rust to be found though, I guess I have the grease to thank for that. All the new bits and bobs I've made, bought, messed around with, I sandblasted. They will be powder coated and hopefully re-assembly...

Unicorn on the Ocean - 1120AF Coming to Canada

Plodding along slowly wishing it was happening faster. Working on getting the chassis "ready" while procrastinating on the habitat decisions. But I think I'm getting close to deciding how I'm going to do that, on the basis that you work with what you know and what you can afford. Layout wise I...

Ex army trucks - Are they worth it?

Back on topic... When I was looking at trucks I went up to L Jackson to assess a Man 18.290 https://www.govsales.co.uk/index.php/search-results-by-description/50418-man-18-220-4x4-cargo-truck-with-twist-locks-and-tail-lift It had been on the lot a long time, and they wanted £42k for it. I...

I don't know the full history, but it is either not enough air to hold the spring "off" on the park brake, a slow leak applying brakes on the service brake side, or something binding up inside the drum. I would use the test ports schreader valves on the top of the diff to start to try and solve...

Unicorn on the Ocean - 1120AF Coming to Canada

Very slow and somewhat unsteady progress is being made. It's reaching a point where it's a little overwhelming, but after a few big decisions get made things will be better again. My dad had a suggestion for relocating the hydraulic tank so my box could be closer to the cab, It will sit between...

A perfect analogy! I'm absolutely in agreement with you. And figuring this stuff out was why I did the test. The builders guide gives no options to forego a subframe on top of the chassis. Every suggestion they give, there's a subframe. So that would limit the flex to a degree, although many...

Unicorn on the Ocean - 1120AF Coming to Canada

I'd be interested to know the details of how you would do it again? How would you load/unload the wheel? Ours will be approximately 42" tall and 300lbs. Yes unfortunately there isn't room between cab and box, it's too narrow and there's a lot going on there. Hydraulic tank for winch, pass...

Yes it's certainly a valid suggestion, I think you mentioned that a little while back. I plan to stick to a rear mounted wheel for the following reasons. I am already maxing out the length of the body in terms of overhangs, and the logistics of getting a wheel in and out of a garage is much...

Thanks Neil, useful info. Yeah the 4 point pivoting style subframes, whilst I get their benefits, seem unfriendly for highway manners and not great for the frame unless you put them on a subframe above the rails. Limiting the sway seems sensible. I see your truck still has a subframe on top of...

Big day! I took her for a spin around the block, so much fun. The air system is working as it should, even the ABS does it's thing. All the indicator lights are still functional and I am super happy it didn't snap in half. While I was out and about, I thought I would test the chassis flex. I...

Gotcha, I'll keep an eye on mine to avoid that expense! I'm thinking more of an internal valve leak as well, like a leak that slowly puts pressure into the service hoses without you knowing. If that makes sense. If the shoes are rubbing slightly I guess they'll clearance themselves eventually....

You can (at least on mine) check pressure with a schrader valve for both service brake and the park brake air supplies right on top of the diff. Picture below, under a little black cap. The park brake release lines are the ones that go to both sides, and you'd be looking for the same pressure...
