Replaced the MAF sensor and the truck fires right up, very smoothly I might add, then dies.

The check engine light has not popped back on. As for the manifold, in front of the butterfly wasn’t too dirty. Behind the butterfly was dirty. To do a half assed job of cleaning it, I gave it a few sprays of MAF cleaner from a distance, and wiped with a shop towel.

Well I picked up a code reader and decided to give reading it a shot anyway. That didn’t work, I don’t want to start buying parts if I don’t have an accurate diagnostic. I think I’ve put myself in a position where I need to have a mechanic look at it.

Bad news...I replaced the battery and it fired right up but died after it went off of high idle. And would not start after that. I have no idea what the problem is.

Update: I got home and decided to disconnect the battery to see if resetting the computer would change the symptoms. When I reconnected the battery and tried to start it the battery was dead! It’s a really old battery. I replaced the alternator last January with a cheap O’Reilly’s unit...

Is replacing the ECU a job that can be done at home? I recall a post on this forum once where someone mentioned replacing it, but had to replace all the locks and ignition as well because of the chip in the keys.

I had a shop do a drain and fill at 175k, I immediately checked the fluid when I noticed the issue and it looked great.

Thanks for the tip Sabre! I don't suppose there is a diagnosis for the accumulator? Maybe spread soapy water and look for bubbles?

Thanks for the link, I also dug up an old thread on how to just change out the failing motor, for very cheap, I might try to go that route. If I do, I will be sure to document it, so that there is another thread confirming that it works.

Does anyone have an idea of how long I might have before this thing is dangerous to drive? I have a couple of chores that I need the truck for before I can garage it indefinitely.

Thanks Coffeegoat, What your describing seems to be what the problem is, the HBB was recalled apparently, doubt they'll replace mine with 208k miles on it. I hope there is an inexpensive fix for this because I saw a few reports of $1300 being the going rate on another forum.

My breaking performance does not seem to be affected at all, and the amount of fluid missing is minimal. I would really like to avoid just giving it to a mechanic and having to cough up exorbitant amounts of lettuce.

There are a few details I have neglected: it is an '02 limited, and some brake fluid appears to be missing.
