Official "My name is..." "And I ride..."

Current stable includes a cheap cyclocross bike that I use for gravel road training rides when it's wet/muddy and I don't want to trash my good bike, a Gary Fischer Marlin single speed currently setup as a 1x10 with a surly karate monkey rigid fork and my main/race bike a 2013 Specialized Epic...

If you had to have one bike?

Not the ideal expedition bike per se but I have to say my Specialized Epic Carbon Expert with the Roval carbon wheels works quite well on the road thanks in part to the DT swiss internals in the hubs and it is simply amazing in any sort of single track or gravel roads. I wouldn't take it on a...

Subaru Outback (or similar) towing an expo trailer? Warning - philosophical rambling

That is just the 2.5 NA motor with the standard 2010 4-speed automatic transmission. The steel wheels came from Tire Rack with the snow tires mounted on them but they can likely be sourced sans tires as well. Hope that helps.

Subaru Outback (or similar) towing an expo trailer? Warning - philosophical rambling

This was my setup for deer camp last fall. The camper is a custom camper I built, it weighs 1360 with the propane tanks and rv battery on board. I stowed my gear in the back of the subaru so there wasn't so much weight behind me since the camper doesn't have brakes on the axle. I had a 2"...

Ford F250 Project, input needed on drivetrain options 6.9 IDI vs. 7.3 powerstroke etc

No kidding, I was looking at doing a 1999-2004 D60/Sterling 10.5 swap but I figured just swapping in the correct Dana 60 was easier. Why the 05, better ride quality with the coils or better articulation?

Ford F250 Project, input needed on drivetrain options 6.9 IDI vs. 7.3 powerstroke etc

Lots of good info guys thanks for the input! dd76522, do you have any pics of your truck on the 37's? I'm thinking of trimming and putting 35's on this truck with no lift or maybe a very slight body lift since I need to swap cabs anyway. I will probably need to regear ultimately though since...

Ford F250 Project, input needed on drivetrain options 6.9 IDI vs. 7.3 powerstroke etc

The cummins is tempting but they seem to go for stupid money right now. Rot Box, you bring up a lot of good points. I was told I would need to swap wiring harnesses primarily because the dash in the 97 is all electronic whereas the dash in the 87 isn't, thus the gauges in the 97 dash wouldn't...

Ford F250 Project, input needed on drivetrain options 6.9 IDI vs. 7.3 powerstroke etc

My dad has a 1987 Ford F250 4x4 diesel that he no longer uses since he now has three 7.3 powerstroke diesel superduty pickups Long story short I'm buying the '87 from him on the cheap. It has around 130k on the odometer with the original 6.9 idi engine, C6 trans and whatever the stock transfer...

Official "My name is..." "And I ride..."

Just updating mine since my rides seem to change every so often. Current rides include Surly Karate Monkey set up as a 1x9 with SRAM X9/X0 drivetrain and Velocity P35 wheelset Surly Long Haul Trucker - currently being built with stuff from Rivendell Bike and a sweet set of 40h Velocity Dyad...

    2010 Subaru Outback lift kits

These little subaru's are definitely capable. I drove my wife's 2010 Forester down a rough forest trail following my brother-in-laws H3 and was able to keep up and take his line with the exception of taking the easy line around a pretty deep mud hole. I won't be lifting the fozzie but I am...

Thinking about a new mtn bike - full susp. - disk brakes - entry level - cheap!

I would definitely stay away from any full suspension bike until you can afford to buy a really good one. The biggest thing is to buy the best frame you can in your price range, everything else can be replaced. I just bought a Specialized Stumpjumper Comp 29er today, it wasn't cheap but I can...

First Gun - what shot gun

Get an 870 combo and then you can use it for upland bird/small game hunting with the 26 or 28" barrel and deer or large game with a rifled barrel. Just my .02 if you can get a barrel with a cantilever scope mount opt for that versus iron sights. I have an 870 deer special with synthetic stocks...

    Adventure Bicycle retrofit?

I will concede that there is merit to most of what you're saying, I probably didn't word my thoughts very well. Specific to rear cassettes I was trying to state that in my mind there is a point of diminishing returns in terms of wheel offset/strength, and cassette weight. I never did a lot of...

    Adventure Bicycle retrofit?

I can't imagine how they can possibly fit 12 speeds in there, at some point in my mind it becomes counterproductive because you can't help but make the cassette heavier by adding gears. The other thing that bugs me is the electronic shifting that's coming out. I'm all for it on cars and...

    Adventure Bicycle retrofit?

Good point on the cost of building versus buying. I am building mine only because I will have the freedom to tailor it to my specific desire and intended usage, and because I prefer the resiliency and ride of steel to aluminum for a touring bike that will potentially see some gravel road/two...

    Adventure Bicycle retrofit?

I've not seen anything specific for using bags like that without panniers. I think it could be done if you know someone that can TIG aluminum tubing/rod so you can keep the weight down. I've purchased a trunk and panniers from nashbar, they were very inexpensive but it seems like a crapshoot...

    Adventure Bicycle retrofit?

I'm building a hybrid touring bike myself utilizing an old Trek 820 steel frame, the first MTB I owned. I could have bought a decent touring bike for what I'll end up putting into this one but this has sentimental value since it was my first MTB and second bike I ever bought. My first was a...
