    exposed icy road traction devices

That's a good idea! I'll have to remember that. Would also work for helping someone who is stuck but has different size tires.

St Louis County Search and Rescue

Yes, we are unbelievably fortunate to be as well funded as we are. Our Undersheriff is real big on side scan sonar and ROVs. He and one of the volunteers were instrumental in taking SeaRay 'rich guy toys' and turning them into SAR tools. He has pushed very hard for a very long time, pursuing...

    exposed icy road traction devices

Sorry to thread dredge. Wanted to share my experience with chains. The diamond pattern from tirechain.com go on super easy. I run the reinforced diamond pattern. I ordered 265/70-17 for my winterforce tires. They are slightly small but work okay. They fit the silent armor 265/70-17 on my...

St Louis County Search and Rescue

Our boss showed us some love in a local paper this weekend. We are an all volunteer organization that serves the largest county east of the Mississippi, bigger than the state of Connecticut. http://www.duluthbudgeteer.com/opinion/columnists/4232767-rescue-squads-remarkable-work

    DSLR question

Yeah same here. I have I K1000 with a few lenses I got long before the k100. That's what steered me down the digital K mount path.

    DSLR question

Awesome! I upgraded from a K100 to a D750 about 9 months ago. I was having electrical issues with the K100 and started noticing issues that you mentioned became more glaringly obvious; focus, grainy, etc...

    AED for expedition use?

I gave it as an analogy not a shopping list. Two extremes where most people fall somewhere in the middle. Good to hear that you are pursuing more medical training. Not enough people do that.

First-Aid situations you've encountered in the backcountry

Over 20 years of prehospital/wilderness emergency medical experience. Started in boy scouts, then open water life guarding, ski patrol (500-700 volunteer hours / yr), currently volunteer SAR. We see about 400 calls per year and I roll on about 1/3 of them. A recent training presented an...

    AED for expedition use?

Yeah the odds are not good, some times it works, mostly it doesn't. I'm 0 for 11, but most of my calls are back country. First one was a lightning strike at a beach when I was 14. Look at it this way. You need to triage your money/time. OP, do you already have EMT level training, with lots of...

    2015 JKUR bumper rebuild

Mounted up Painted cured over night. Mounted it up and reinstalled the top hat. Then I realized I forgot about figuring a method to mount the damn front plate!!! I will have to figure something out. Got copper anti sieze smeared all over the place. Forgot to anti size the 2 o'clock bolt...

    2015 JKUR bumper rebuild

Contactor mounted Initially, I really wanted to mount the contactor very close to the battery in order to minimize the length of cable that is always hot. That proved impractical. There just isn't enough room. I didn't want to complicate matters for a future potential dual battery project. I...

    2015 JKUR bumper rebuild

Sanded, blasted and primed Got the minor weld splatter cleaned up, bead blasted and a couple coats of primer on. Hope to get a few coats of matte black on before the night is out. Also, found donor for a future engine swap. Think it will fit? Might have to push the fire wall back a bit...

    2015 JKUR bumper rebuild

Fabrication almost complete Got a lot done last night, even with two SAR calls mixed in. Bumper is welded up. Need to clean up some edges with the flap disc and bead blast it. Then a couple coats of primer and then some matte black.

    2015 JKUR bumper rebuild

More fit up Cut some gussets and a contactor bracket on the burn table. Hopeing to get the upper and lower flats gusseted and burned in tonight. Might even get the shackle tabs cleaned up and tacked in place square. Order of operations will be tricky to avoid warping the large flat T1 plate...

    2015 JKUR bumper rebuild

Mock up #2 Here is mockup #2. I cut six 1/2" thick spacers on the burn table. With a full stack on each side and mounting bolts torqued, the gear case lightly touches the grille piece. I cut some 3/8 spacers as well if I want to move it out more. For a while I have wanted to install a filter...

    2015 JKUR bumper rebuild

A flat plate is not very stiff against face axis loading, even T1. I'm fitting a 1/4" x 2" flat across the top and one at a slight tilt on the bottom. The bottom plate is drilled 7/16 on 4" centers for a skid plate to bridge between the bumper and front cross member. This will help protect...

    2015 JKUR bumper rebuild

Mocking it up I drew up a rough idea in Autocad then imported to pronest and burned it out. 3/8" T1 for the base plate. Base plate flat to the frame horns, the gear case touches the cross over that supports the bottom of the grille. So I'm kind of at a decision point. Cut the grille around...

    2015 JKUR bumper rebuild

Early last fall I rushed through building a bumper for my 2015 JKUR. I was going back to Utah in October to visit my wife again and I wanted a winch to explore some places I was hesitant to go in June when I was out there winch-less. Had a single speed mile marker, sourced a milsurp solonoid...
