Converting a factory JK/JKU hardtop to modular

I've been wanting to do this in my conversion. The best potential solution I know of is Dzus fasteners with winged heads. One problem with this solution is that my flanges are not perfectly uniform in thickness, and the fasteners are sized at about 0.020" increments - very precise! Another...

Converting a factory JK/JKU hardtop to modular

I posted this guy a few years back - since then, the top has worked great except for weatherproofing issues, and my work on it has dawdled since this is my only vehicle. I'm working on a second iteration, and will post updates soon!

Converting a factory JK/JKU hardtop to modular

Hey Jeff, I'm glad you got a 2-door to finally install onto! What are your methods of weatherstripping/sealing the interfaces? The interface between the rear and top panels is vertical, and is one of my problem areas for leaking in rain and snow, especially while moving. I've put EPDM foam tape...

What did you do to your Expo Jeep today?

How was the install? Do you notice any difference in heat and sound isolation? How did you decide between BedRug and BedTred? Sorry for the bombardment, I've been really looking into these. No carpet currently, can't take the noise anymore!

Converting a factory JK/JKU hardtop to modular

They are further outboard than you suggested. My reasons for putting them there was that the attachment points are now straight parallel lines front-rear, at the highest point on the outside of the hard top: This allows me to build a roof rack/basket similar to the Smittybilt Defender, which...

Converting a factory JK/JKU hardtop to modular

To support the roof panel, I used four support points - two in the front, and two in the rear. In the front, there is a plate that sits on top of the roll hoop structure on either side. I tapped a hole in that plate because it's pretty thick, and just used some 1" aluminum square tubing as a...

Converting a factory JK/JKU hardtop to modular

Just about a year after jscherb first started this thread, I used his very thorough write-up to make my own modular hard top, this time on a real 2dr JK. I'm planning to make a video demonstrating the function, but here's a small pic dump: Up a quick trail near Orange County, CA: Removed the...

You've hit on exactly the two points I was worried about. Thanks for the advice and encouragement!

Converting a factory JK/JKU hardtop to modular

This is great! I'm itching to do a similar modification, but I have no experience in fiberglass. I was thinking of using slotted angle iron and rivets (which I do have experience with) to attach the modular pieces together, instead. Do you have any thoughts, tips or warnings about that direction?
