Viair 450c in first generation Tacoma

Well, if anyone is curious, here's what I ended up doing: -Air tank above the rear diff, bolted to the bed -Compressor under the driver's seat -Pressure switch and relay under the center console, zip tied to the bracket that the center console bolts to. I drilled some holes in the bracket to...

Viair 450c in first generation Tacoma

I'm working on figuring out mounting for a Viair 10007 kit, including a 450c compressor in my 2000, and have a few questions for anyone who might have gone down this route before. I've found a ton of info on doing this in 2nd gens, but not much for 1sts. I'm planning to put the tank above the...

Thanks for the detailed reply, that's helpful. I did look up the factory spec for ride height in the service manual yesterday and measured, I'm only about 3/4" up from stock in the rear, so in theory it probably isn't working too badly. The seller told me 2", but either he overstated, or the...

That would make it work better with the lift, but doesn't help my air tank clearance (in fact probably makes it worse).

Well, I was planning to mount it above the rear diff, as I've seen others do, but it's not fitting as well as I'd hoped. I just did a little mockup test fit, and the linkage that connects the little armature that mounts to the rear passenger side of the rear axle and the tank interfere. This...

On board water systems questions. Specifically check valves and venting.

Yeah, you'd definitely want to filter the air well at a minimum. I work with pretty sensitive pneumatic systems at work though, and have some experience on filtration. It's not that hard or expensive.

Onboard air setup came today. I got the Viair 10007 kit, with the 450c compressor and 2.5 gallon tank. Found it for just under $300 online. It'll be nice having it not only for airing back up the truck, but it should be able to seat mountain bike tires tubeless too. I'll post some pictures of...

    First Gen Tacoma Build Advice

I'd definitely be interested in seeing your setup! From research I've done though, it sounds like there's more room to work with on the facelifted '01-'04 trucks than there is on my '00, making mounting a hidden winch a bit harder on mine. I haven't yet taken the bumper off to measure anything...

On board water systems questions. Specifically check valves and venting.

Has anybody tried using onboard air (regulated down to moderate pressure) to pressurize a water tank to provide delivery pressure?

That's exactly my plan. I'll just be careful, and if I find that I'm needing to turn around sooner than I'd like to, I'll add gear until that isn't the case anymore.

    First Gen Tacoma Build Advice

Point taken. What I meant though is that I don't foresee myself being in a situation where getting stuck for a bit is life threatening. I'll have supplies to survive where I'm at for a while, and with a high lift and gear to winch with it I'd be able to self rescue. It might take longer and more...

    First Gen Tacoma Build Advice

That's pretty much my thinking too. A winch certainly wouldn't be a bad idea per se, but I do think it's overkill for what I'm aiming to do. I've got a shackle mount for the rear hitch, but haven't yet done anything to beef up the situation at the front. It's got tow hooks, but they probably...

    First Gen Tacoma Build Advice

As I understand it, there's room in the '01-'04 trucks for a hidden winch in the stock bumper, but not really in the '98-'00s like I have. They got a facelift in '01 and there's apparently more room in the newer ones. I'm thinking that a high lift and a lift mate to get stuff under a spinning...

    First Gen Tacoma Build Advice

The biggest reason for the roof rack is to more easily carry skis, with the camper setup in place. Currently I have risers for the bed to make room for skis underneath, but those eat into the headroom more than I'd like. There'd be little weight up there most of the time. I'm not opposed to a...

    First Gen Tacoma Build Advice

Thanks for the reply! That's certainly an option. I'd need to think a bit about where I could actually store it when not in use- maybe the best option would be to leave it in my garage day to day, and break it out when I might actually need it. Leaving it in the bed won't work great for my...

    First Gen Tacoma Build Advice

Hi everybody, I bought a 2000 Tacoma TRD V6 MT last summer, and have been outfitting it as an overlanding/camping rig bit by bit. I've been reading a ton on here and elsewhere, and seeing how other people have done things has been hugely informative. Here's where I'm at so far: 2" lift, 32"...

Mounting a roof rack on a camper shell

Glad to hear it about the waterproofing. I'm confidant that I can make whatever tracks work, I'll poke around and see what I can find on the cheap. Thanks!

Mounting a roof rack on a camper shell

Thanks for the super detailed response! I take it that the sealing is quite effective? I sleep under the shell regularly (and live in the Pacific North Wet), so keeping things as waterproof as I can is a real priority. I've got a couple sets of old Thule square bars in my garage that I'll plan...
