    2006 Stewart & Stevenson/BAE 6x6 Build

By portal's true definition no,...... my reference was more in the design advantages incorporated into them: High differential ground clearance due to the much smaller ring and pinion size. We are talking about a forged ring gear the size of a Dodge diesel 1ton with an axel capacity of over 19k...

    2006 Stewart & Stevenson/BAE 6x6 Build

High John, The FMTV is in the design/build process. As all projects of this size, making the complicated simple just takes time. As to any more coming available, I haven't seen or heard of anything. But then again, I haven't been looking. Good luck with your Mog, they are an exceptional...

    2006 Stewart & Stevenson/BAE 6x6 Build

Photo Update... So here are a few photos after the original box came off! Holy Sh!* was this thing overbuilt and heavy!. Had to pull it off with a loader! Near future is to shorten the frame/wheelbase and decide which mounting system I will use for the new living quarters box.

What is the best “compact” expedition vehicle

Since I have owned a few Elements since 2005 and use them as daily delivery vehicles in the mountains of Colorado I can give you a real world insight. Don't waste your time, they are great for what they are designed for. That being paved roads, not off-road. They are of light duty design, read...

    4 Michelin 395-85-R20 XML TIRES 98% Tread

I received a quote for six 1600R20 tires(much bigger and heavier) from So. Cal to Denver. Was $445.00 I would guess four 395-85-20 would be in the high two hundreds. YMMV :sombrero: -R

    '97 Dodge Ram 2500, 4x4 Cummins Powered

Had a '95 with same setup, great truck very reliable but always upgrade/add a front end frame/steering brace. Also upgrade the rear drum brake piston to the dually piston, make a BIG difference when stopping a loaded truck. -R

    2006 Stewart & Stevenson/BAE 6x6 Build

Hi Mike, Depending on if you can do your own work as I am, parts for just the ring & pinion are around $1k each. Not bad if you consider they are forged parts. I am still waiting on prices for either Detroit Tru-tracs or full Detroit lockers. Shoot me a pm if you have other questions. On a...

    Question about overall height

Just a thought, but an older Alaskan hard side pop-up camper would be perfect for your truck and very low profile. Just my .02

    2006 Stewart & Stevenson/BAE 6x6 Build

The suspension of these trucks are known for being soft sprung for the load our military places on them. The older 5 tons were only tolerable when carrying large payloads. My guess (and I mean guess) is the FMTV's added deck height, soft suspension, high HP combined with very heavy loads...

    2006 Stewart & Stevenson/BAE 6x6 Build

Hi Mike, -The driveline issues were all taken care of, I think there was an update/recall for early trucks but contact BAE in Texas for the final word. -If you keep the stock gearing 7.8 ratio the truck will be at the rev limiter (2400rpm) @ 58mph, so you need to gauge your fuel...

    2006 Stewart & Stevenson/BAE 6x6 Build

Yea, I have owned Cummins most of my life and would prefer one but Cat makes a solid engine and when cared for is a 600k to 700k motor. The C7 does get much better fuel economy than my Cummins 8.3. Other than running an overhead at 10k and 100k and routine maintenance not a lot to look out for...

    2006 Stewart & Stevenson/BAE 6x6 Build

Interesting thoughts, but far from reality. Since you have "read up" on the MTV line of trucks what is so low quality about the drivetrain? Caterpillar C7 330hp 6cyl diesel engine, Allison MD3070PT 7spd auto transmission with full time 6wd integrated transfer case and Arvin Meritor face mount...
