    The Owyhee

Wow. Hempler's center cut, fried to perfection and served straight on sesame rolls, washed down with Ballast Point Big Eye. And still alive to describe the (delectable) experience. Awesome!

    The Owyhee

Some murky details coming back to my aged brain after reviewing a few pix from that trip... I mentioned the large Nature Conservancy signboard placed at the top of the eastern descent into 45 Ranch. On the back side (facing away from the road) there was a map that actually showed the open roads...

    The Owyhee

When we passed through there were signs as well, though there were also signs on the approach to the 45 Ranch from the east. In that case (at least when we passed through in 2011) there was also a large informational sign put up by the Nature Conservancy, located just before the road dropped...

    The Owyhee

And so we did, except we carried on west by southwest out of the 45 Ranch. Crutcher's is on the list for the next time we visit that part of the world. Great photos, thanks for sharing!

iPad vs. iPad Mini for Backcountry Travel

My iPad mini has a GPS chip in it. Doesn't care whether there is a cell signal or not. I use downloaded USGS topo maps via an app, the iPad thus becomes a giant-sized GPS with better resolution than any of the small Garmins in my life. It's not the be-all and end-all; I still carry paper maps...

Locating the final resting place of Gerard Vultee of Vultee Aircraft

airplanes- the alternative overland vehicle Thanks for the thread. Being an aviation enthusiast, I enjoyed learning about Gerard Vultee. I am surprised at how few aviation related posts show up on this board, given the adventurous nature of the community. Apart from literally allowing you to...

Who had the fancy, black, all-metal shovels for sale at OX?

It was me who has been coveting one of those shovels. Todd, thanks for starting this thread. That's the one, Lance. I should have bought one on the spot when Todd and I walked past the Aluminess display, but I was in a state of sensory overload.

Dust to Snow- another Nevada transit

Foy, you pretty well figured it out. We did return north to depart Jarbidge; the road we took from there to the Bruneau River is as you described- it's also the main route into town if/when the southern option is closed. We planned to cross the Owyhee south of Bull Camp- Star Ranch is private...

Dust to Snow- another Nevada transit

My pleasure! It was fun, mostly; some stressful moments, but that's part of why we do these things. I spend way too much of my life chained to a desk with a computer on it. So nice to get a change of scenery! Thanks for the kind words, Lance. I will gather my thoughts and post some more...

Dust to Snow- another Nevada transit

Thanks for the update. I had no idea; what a bummer. As soon as I get a combination of time and good weather I'll do an aerial reconnaissance and add some photos to this thread. Mission vehicle:

Dust to Snow- another Nevada transit

Homeward bound The last few days of our trip originally had us making our way southwest from Denio over the mountains between that dusty crossroads town and the Black Rock Desert; despite improving weather, that route was obviously well snowed-in, and were beat from dealing with weather delays...

Dust to Snow- another Nevada transit

Thanks! To y'all that have replied before. I have photos galore from lots of other trips with my usual band of suspects, around the Basin & Range country. Need to exercise the brain cells; maybe I can scare up a narrative for some of those, too.

Dust to Snow- another Nevada transit

Now for the "snow" part... Surpise! The landscape had changed overnight. A thin layer of white stuff. Interestingly the night hadn't been quite as cold. And no wonder: between the insulating nature of the heavy cloud cover, and the insulating nature of the snow on my tent, no wonder I...

Dust to Snow- another Nevada transit

Whither weather Day five was wet from the get-go. Later we realized we managed to pick the one grim (weather-wise) week in the Fall season to plan a trip. Nothing to do but carry on. While packing up our wet gear I visualized my Thule car top carrier morphing into an Autohome Maggiolina RTT...

Dust to Snow- another Nevada transit

Onward... Day Four The fourth morning broke with some moderate cumulus visible from our north-facing outlook, but otherwise dry. We gambled that the two-track descending the gulch below our camp would take us toward a road that maps and gps indicated would be more substantial. That turned out...

Dust to Snow- another Nevada transit

The trouble was, the mechanical engineer that built the entire harness and selected the switch under consideration, and has about 40 years of automotive troubleshooting experience, namely me, missed the switch problem on the first 3 passes. My DVM was so sensitive that it was picking up stray...

Dust to Snow- another Nevada transit

The road ahead: And the road just traveled: A USFS station, tucked into a high valley at 8400 feet; Idaho just visible through the gap at center right. Wet stuff falling from the sky, though at our current elevation it wasn't liquid. Looking north into the flat volcanic terrain of...
