Yellowstone National Park

Our friend Felicia (http://www.bellatreks.com) in Livingstone had recommended us to cross into Yellowstone National Park in the North East corner on the Beartooth Highway instead of the “normal” tourist route in through Mammoth.

The Beartooth Highway was a really scenic drive and we crossed over the Beartooth Pass at 3342 meters. The scenery along the highway was more dramatic than Yellowstone, except it has not all the thermal activity as Yellowstone has.

After seeing kilometer upon kilometer with forest up in the north it was amazing to get to Yellowstone and see the thermal landscape with hot pools, mud pools, terraces, geysers, and of course, all the wild life.

Along the NE Entrance Road we saw big herds of bison gracing along the river.

Sometimes wildlife and masses of tourists are not the best combination, but the wildlife always has the right of way (at least the bison...).

After a day of driving we stopped by a hot spring called Boiling River in Mammoth and soaked in there for two hours. While we were soaking a big group on Elk came down to the river to drink.

Funny enough, they passed just next to all the tourists in the hot spring, and continued their dinner a bit further down the river.

The Grand Canyon of Yellowstone River was pretty impressive and worthy of its name.

We were also quite impressed by the Lower Waterfall. Norway has loads of waterfalls and sometimes when we are tourists in other countries and are told that we have to see the waterfall, we are quite often disappointed. But not in Yellowstone!

Last evening in the Park it snowed a bit and in the morning it was ice on our tent. South, south, south, south!!

Glad to see that you went back through Moab. Also really glad to see you hit Yellowstone.
I have never done beef basin, was it any good?
Lockhart Basin to Elephant Hill are pretty good trails. Lockhart is, well, interesting, but not bad at all.

That hot spring you were sitting in is a favorite of mine when we go! Wonderful!

Just seeing the photos brings back the memories of the smell!

Cheers

When you go to Zion, if you want to avoid the crowds while camping, there is a small state park called Coral Pink Dunes that is just outside the east entrance. Beautiful spot with, you guessed it, pink sand dunes!

saw you roll through town yesterday, tire troubles?

Hey! :)

Not trouble, but we are getting new tires. The 35" GY MT/R have now rolled about 30 000 miles, and we feel like getting some new before going south through Central and South America. We are also changing from 35"s to 37"s as that is what the axles are geared for...

Played around in Fins&Things and Hell's Revenge a couple of days ago. And drove through Arches and Island in the Sky. Fantastic area!!! One of my favourites in US!

Salt Lake City - Malin's post

In April when Espen was on his way north he stopped by Tom Wood in Ogden to have a new drive shaft made for our Nissan Patrol. When Tom heard that we were passing through Ogden again, we were invited to dinner and to sleep in a "proper" bed in a "proper" house. We had a really nice evening in Ogden with Tom and his family, and they are now invited to Norway....

Being in the area we had to see the Great Salt Lake and Antelope Island State Park. Great Salt Lake is far saltier than the ocean, but we did not try out if we could float in it.

Getting our feet wet was enough and our legs were covered in salt the rest of the day.

The last five seasons I have worked as a chef for Antarctica Logistics & Expeditions at their base Patriot Hills in Antarctica.

Part of the reason to stop in Salt Lake City was to stop by the ALE office and say hi. It was nice to see the ALE people again. I will not see them this season on the ice, because then we will still be on the road. Thanks to Chris that took us in and gave us a home while we were sightseeing around in Salt Lake.

On Sunday morning at 09.15 we were in the Tabernacle to listen to the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. It was amazing to listen to the choir with their 360 members, the largest choir I ever heard.

Afterwards we walked up the hill to look at the State Capitol and got a great view over the city. We ended the day with a “small” milk shake that we just managed to consume half of. Saw some couples that had obviously been there before as they only shared one...

And in the next post we're back in Moab!

Wow, that organ is HUGE. Did they play it with the choir? We have a similar organ here in town.

Moab

Finally! Back in Moab. Must to admit that I've missed the place, the atmosphere, and of course the recreation possibilities for 4x4 freaks... :)

Have recently had some problems with our aux gel battery lately. It seems that is doesn't receive charging as well as it should. The voltage looks good after a full day of driving, but when we start using power, the voltage drops way too fast. It is a 120 Ah battery, and the first few months it would keep my fridge running for 3-4 days. Now it is less than 2, and if I recharge the laptop, only one... Bought a "intelligent" batterycharger, hooked it up, and let it run for two days. Looked better the first couple of days, but now I'm not so sure. Hope I havent killed the aux batt.

Well! After a couple of days by the pool at the campground in Moab (while waiting for the battery....), we left to explore the Parks nearby. First day we spent in Arches. Still beautiful (I was there on my way north, but Malin hasn't been there before.) and kind of crowded. I hade some thoughts about driving the White Rim Trail to show Malin the landscape, but the trail was washed out. A 30 by 30 feet part is missing...

And this time I'm actually IN some of the pics!

The next day we drove up the road past Gemini Bridges to Island In The Sky. Nothing technical, but a scenic route without much traffic. From lthe view points up at Island In The Sky, we could see large parts of the White Rim Trail. Fantastic views!!

The road along the edge is The White Rim Trail.

Took a pic of this one on our way out from the park. Next mod, and then do the Trans Sibirian railway on our way back home to norway??? :)

Even got to do some playing around up at Sand Flats. I'll try to post some pics of that as well. In the meantime, check out unURBAN's first videos on youtube!!!
