Ive got a 2008 Tacoma double cab trd sport longbox and im just getting into expo. Im planning a couple trips in the next few years. one to roatan in honduras and another up through alaska and the yukon. as im in the planning stage for my rig i was wondering if this is even the best platform to start with.

any recomendations as to a better starting platform? would a landcruiser be a better choice? gx470? 4runner? Tundra? this is my daily driver and i have put 110,000 in the last year so it needs to be comfy and decently fuel efficient. I havent crossed out the tacoma just yet as its been a great truck for me just want to be sure before i pull the trigger on a new build.:victory:

The one that I can think of would be an 80 Series. But other than that the Tacoma is up for it. Just depends on how you have it set up as well.

the 140" wheel base is so long to get you high centered quite often.

you will need dual lockers a winch and great recovery skills with such a long boat

110,000 miles of d.d. in one year, wow!

Your Tacoma is a good platform. Yes the wheel base is long on your d-cab long bed, but there are people doing hard wheeling with that rig.

It all depends on how you want to travel. What kind of travel and what kind of rig do you want to build?

I think this is the key. Are you planning on doing alot of hard wheeling or just exploring the backcountry? If you want to do alot of wheeling it might not be a bad idea to look into another rig. Maybe something along the lines of a shorter taco, cherokee, or landcruiser. If your just trying to use your truck to get to awesome places and do alot of driving you will probably appreciate the space and better ride of the longer wheelbase.

I love my taco, it is a great rig as far as I am concerned. The long bed double cab is pretty long, but as other said, it depends on what you plan to do. Also, the recovery gear you carry along should be able to get you out of any high centered sticky situatuions. Id suggest a good set of sliders and skids though.

im not gona be doing any hardcore rockcrawling with the truck. i meant to say 110,000 in 2 years btw. ive got a set of sliders waiting to go on the truck. the plan is for a swing away tire carrier in the rear with jerrycans and highlift. im considering an are canopy with sliding drawer for the box. with a sleeping platform for me and the gf. considering a allpro front bumper and tmaxx 9000 winch.(had one on my old YJ and it worked great). plus dual battery, snorkel, rear locker and a set of 285/70/17 km2's.

thats if i go with the taco. i realize the wheelbase is a little on the long side but i need the 6ft bed plus i think the shortbeds look a little off. the doublecab is quite handy aswell whether ive got the 3 dogs in the back or whatever.

As a taco owner I say keep it. There are a few builds here which may inspire you. Why not have a RTT with the shell/cap? Do some searches here and you will be ordering crap tomorrow. Post pics or a link for your build up.

I say keep it. I would actually rather have the long bed. If I could have gotten one with the E-locker, I would have. I want the extra bed space for cargo and for sleeping in since I'm a tall guy.

ya when i bought my truck off the lot i wasnt into 4x4ing and was sold on the trd sport because of the colormatched options/tranny cooler/steering wheel controls and the seats. I wish i had the rear locker though. ive been searching in wrecking yards but everyone wants @ least $1000 for a rear axle so not worth it at this point.
