110 tub dimensions

Can someone give me the dimension of a 110 cab? From the base of the windshield to the rear (5th) door please. I'm in the process of designing a Jeep Scrambler stretched to the 110 cab length and can't find that dimension anywhere online.

mc2az - funny you should ask . . . :sombrero:

I am stretching my 2005 LJ Rubicon to about the same length. I do not have the specific dimension you are looking for, but I do have enough data (I think) to answer your question.

The overall length of my stock LJ is 167 inches.

The overall length of a Defender 110 is 181 inches.

I will be stretching my LJ by 14" behind the rear axle to a total length of 181"

A stock CJ-8 is 9" longer than the stock LJ behind the rear axle. A CJ-8 and a Jeep LJ have the same wheelbase.

Therefore, you need to stretch your tub 5" behind the rear axle to match the overall length of the D110.

If you are stretching the wheelbase of your CJ-8 to 110" from the stock WB of 104", then you will be 1" longer overall than the D100 without adding any length behind the rear axle.

FWIW, I am quite happy to keep my 104" WB while adding the length behind the axle. The added rear overhang will certainly adversely affect my departure angle, but I have had far more issues with my breakover angle than with departure angle. Stretching my WB would only make my breakover angle worse.

D110s (and D90s for that matter) have the same track (58.5") as the Jeep, but our trucks are 4" narrower.

Can you tell that I love both LR D110s and Jeeps?

Please post up your plans and progress.

Thanks

Thanks Overlander, Jim K's formula didn't quite get me to the figure I'm looking for. I kind of figured the regulars here would be protective, but not all of us can afford a new 110 Landy. I'm proposing building a jeep with all the features of the 110. The project is in the design phase now and critical to that one dimension.

Are you planning a 3 door or 5 door? I am curious to see how you plan to do this. I think a 5 door will be nigh-on impossible with only a 6" stretch in wheelbase, unless you are building new front doors quite a bit narrower than OEM in order to make room for the rear doors.

I am also very curious as to your motivation.

Within the last 6 months I SERIOUSLY considered selling my '05 Rubicon Unlimited and searching for/buying a good condition D110. The Rubicon is paid for, and has a market value of around $18k. What I can get in a D110 for $18k will require that I give up a number of features that the Rubicon has and that I use and will miss, such as selectable lockers, 4.0:1 low range transfer case, 4 wheel disc brakes, air conditioning, and a soft top. It is also the age old bargaining game of "the devil you know vs. the devil you don't". I know it's strengths and weaknesses, and I am aware of some of the Defender's strength and weaknesses. If I had bought a D110 4 years (and 85k miles) ago instead of my Rubicon, I am sure I would have a different perspective.

Keep us posted on your project, either here or in the Jeep forum.

Right now I'm designing a 5 door as in the Defender 110. Don't know where you come up with the 6" figure because my figures are quite a bit longer.
The motivation is that I want all the room and features of a 110 but with domestic hardware and availability. As I stated I'm just in the design stages and this will definatly be a long term project.
I plan to build all new from the ground up. I have spoken with THROTTLE DOWN KUSTOMS, they make new jeep frames and can build one to my specs.
The reason for the CJ8 base is two fold. First the rear overhang is comparable to the D110 and second is the original year pre dates some of the complicated electronics.
All of the stretch in my design is between the doors and the rear wheel well. This would accomodate the new door placement in a configuration similar to the Land Rover.
The bottom line is I can build a brand new vehicle from the ground up to MY specs that no one currently sells, for a lot cheaper than something that Mopar thought would fit the masses.

Very nice. The rear doors sure will make access to the rear storage area easier.

Don't know where you come up with the 6" figure because my figures are quite a bit longer.

The 6" figure is the difference in wheelbase between a CJ-8 and a D110. A CJ-8 (and the '04-'06 Unlimited) has a wheelbase of ~104". The Defender 110 has a wheelbase of 110". 110"-104"=6" difference. I assumed, probably incorrectly, that you intended to stay with the D110 wheelbase.

The motivation is that I want all the room and features of a 110 but with domestic hardware and availability. As I stated I'm just in the design stages and this will definatly be a long term project.

With a ground-up build you will surely have the opportunity to set it up any way you like. Diesel or petrol? Jeep axles or one-tons? Leaf springs or links & coils?

Excellent. They will galv the frame for you also, yes?

Understood. I thought the D110 and CJ-8 rear overhang looked close, but do not have those dimensions.

All of the stretch in my design is between the doors and the rear wheel well. This would accomodate the new door placement in a configuration similar to the Land Rover.

I look forward to seeing some renderings. Have you talked to Jeff Scherb about his projects? He has done some very interesting things with LWB Jeeps, as well as his Safari hard top for his LJ.

The bottom line is I can build a brand new vehicle from the ground up to MY specs that no one currently sells, for a lot cheaper than something that Mopar thought would fit the masses.

I sure do hope that this turns out to be true (the cost aspect) for you. The cost aspect, including my time, is what is keeping me in a Jeep rather than jumping into a real 110. The cost for me to stretch the rear tub of my LJ is realtively small (under $500 and under 30 hours including paint). Building a new vehicle, from scratch, is much more than I want to tackle at this point in my life. I applaud your ambition.

You may already be aware, but Aqualu sells quad cab CJ body and rear tubs of various lengths. I am sure you could combine them to get close to what you are looking for. They are also aluminum, like the Defender bodies.

hope this helps: the horizontal dimension from the face of the vertical plane below the windscreen and above the front wing to the outside face of the rear door is.........................120.75" +/- 1/4" as I didn't have a second set of hands. Not corrected for temperature :) In all seriousness, these things are handbuilt and can/do vary a bit in every direction and dimension.
Cheers

The Rovers guys probably wish I never showed up here. I was just looking for the one dimension and got way off track for this thread, Sorry.
I have seen Jeff's designs and I get a lot of ideas and inspiration from him.
As for the cost, I figure the major part of it will be the body work. I'll be looking for a quality shop to stretch and hard top the tub. All the mechanical I'll do myself. Plan to overbuild the running gear for dependability. Right now it looks like GM 4.3FI backed by a TH350. The only easily sourced and succesful looking diesel option is the HPA VW kit, seems a tad low powered with the weight I'm thinking of. By the time you crank up the turbo you start to lose the reason you went with the Lugger in the first place.
My goal is a comfortable DD with the capabilities to make the week or 2 trip to Baja or Alaska worry free. Oh yea, and to make others wonder "what is that".

Thanks "Rover". I told my wife last night we were about to drive over to the Ritzy neighborhoods in Scottsdale and find a 110 in a driveway. I figured on the way there I could come up with some smart alec answer why I had a tape measure up to their rig. I was leanin toward the "HOA per foot rule".
Thanks again guys for allowing me to raid your threads. I'll get back where I belong over on the domestics (jeep).

Aw, I am sure they can take it. They are a tough lot . . . :victory:

Best of luck with the project.

Kind of thinking along the lines of Jeremy's www.throttledownkustoms.com hybrid frame. He builds a frame that will accept a CJ8 body works but accomodates the more updated TJ Rubicon running gear. I've been running OME gear in my XJ and really happy with the ride and quality so I'll probably stick with that.

Would like your thoughts on the HPA VW conversion for my needs. They may soon be coming out with the VW mated to the TJ X15 which would be a step in my direction.

Here is some preliminary mock ups with some inspiration. I modified the top left rendering from one of Jeff Scherbs drawings. Just imagine how easy this would all be if we had 1/2 of his tallent
