Right now I'm designing a 5 door as in the Defender 110.
Very nice. The rear doors sure will make access to the rear storage area easier.
Don't know where you come up with the 6" figure because my figures are quite a bit longer.
The 6" figure is the difference in wheelbase between a CJ-8 and a D110. A CJ-8 (and the '04-'06 Unlimited) has a wheelbase of ~104". The Defender 110 has a wheelbase of 110". 110"-104"=6" difference. I assumed, probably incorrectly, that you intended to stay with the D110 wheelbase.
The motivation is that I want all the room and features of a 110 but with domestic hardware and availability. As I stated I'm just in the design stages and this will definatly be a long term project.
With a ground-up build you will surely have the opportunity to set it up any way you like. Diesel or petrol? Jeep axles or one-tons? Leaf springs or links & coils?
I plan to build all new from the ground up. I have spoken with THROTTLE DOWN KUSTOMS, they make new jeep frames and can build one to my specs.
Excellent. They will galv the frame for you also, yes?
The reason for the CJ8 base is two fold. First the rear overhang is comparable to the D110 and second is the original year pre dates some of the complicated electronics.
Understood. I thought the D110 and CJ-8 rear overhang looked close, but do not have those dimensions.
All of the stretch in my design is between the doors and the rear wheel well. This would accomodate the new door placement in a configuration similar to the Land Rover.
I look forward to seeing some renderings. Have you talked to Jeff Scherb about his projects? He has done some very interesting things with LWB Jeeps, as well as his Safari hard top for his LJ.
The bottom line is I can build a brand new vehicle from the ground up to MY specs that no one currently sells, for a lot cheaper than something that Mopar thought would fit the masses.
I sure do hope that this turns out to be true (the cost aspect) for you. The cost aspect, including my time, is what is keeping me in a Jeep rather than jumping into a real 110. The cost for me to stretch the rear tub of my LJ is realtively small (under $500 and under 30 hours including paint). Building a new vehicle, from scratch, is much more than I want to tackle at this point in my life. I applaud your ambition.
