110V/220V AC to 12V DC how to make a cheap power supply from old computer

I have an odd model Waeco CF-35 fridge. It is strictly DC as the danfoss compressor controller is not a DC/AC model. This means I needed an external power supply. These things are often expensive and unreliable with low quality chinese construction. I thought why not use an old computer power supply there probably pretty good. So I googled it. This took me here : http://jumperone.com/2011/06/atx-power-supply-tutorial/

A short while later I had a power supply converted to run my fridge and charge usb devises with the 5v output. I only hooked up the 5v to a usb cable and the 12v to a radio controlled model DC connector. I use RC connectors for practically every thing since there great and inexpensive. Its also handy for my big universal digital smart charger with is also DC input only. I found the fan to be a little loud and excessive but I disconnected it and connected it up to the -5v and +5v for 10v which is noticeably quieter than the standard 12v. Total I spent about 4 bucks on the ceramic dummy load resistors and the 150 ohm resistors necessary for the usb charger.

I would call the project a very successful salvage. This is probably relevant to HAM stuff also.
