Use of Memory Clear and Diag Check for ECU Errors instead of MUT/OBD

well that's pee'd on my strawberries!

Took a 40 pin BMW to OBDII socket and cut the cable. Three wires. Black to OBDII pins 4 and 5 for vehicle and signal ground. Yellow to pin 7 for K-line (signal from ECU). Red to pin 16 for +ve.

Connected yellow to the green wire in Canter (originally only wire connected to OBDII socket), red and black to cigarette lighter output.

Plugged Elm327 OBD plug into OBDII socket. Red led came on.

Plugged Elm327 USB into my computer. Software would communicate with Elm on com port 11 and reported vehicle volts, but then reported interface to vehicle not found. I guess that's what the red light meant.

The Elm is a Chinese clone. At this stage difficult to know where the problem lies. I'll start with checking continuity of the green K-Line wire to the ECU - which needs a bit of dashboard dismantling to access. That will also give me the Bosch (or other) part number.

There's also suggestions of trying different Elm drivers for the computer but I think that's a red herring as software communicates with Elm ok.

If that's double dutch, simple bit is there's a black box in the cable, USB to computer on one side, OBDII to vehicle on the other side.

We have one more 5,000m pass to cross tomorrow. After that its all downhill. And the urgency has reduced. The red light "boost pressure" fault is predictable.

I'll tackle it slowly, including trying a different Elm cable/converter, but that will probably have to wait for a stable address in Brisbane in about 4 months.

ancient English metaphor! :) :)

could a Mitsubishi ever be a lemon?

I obtained the Elm cable from an Aus eBayer. The logisitics of trying to get one from Hong Kong to Lhasa in time were too difficult.

Definitely shonky, the software came with Keygen to unlock it. Nearly as shonky as Mitsubishi being non-standard. Clayton's compliance. :)

today I thought to remove the dead (formerly) flying insect that had somehow got past the defences and was behind the clear plastic of the speedo and other instruments.

After dismantling the dashboard I had a look at the ECU.

I should have realised earlier that the Zexel fuel pump on my engine is married to a Zexel ECU rather than the Bosch unit the manuals refer to.

But then again ... Zexel was originally set up under licence from Bosch and has apparently been a Bosch brand since 2000.

So the Zexel ECU may or may not be identical to a Bosch ECU.

Bother!

tried the US sourced BAFX Bluetooth Elm327 that Pugslyy(?) used.

Computer connection ok, no response from ECU.

Not surprising really I guess, the outside of the unit looks about the same as the usb unit I tried in Tibet.

I'll keep searching.

Most of this is a bit over my head but I have a 05 US FG and it looks like I have two ports, one on the far left under the dash and one in the middle of the dash behind a small door with a small fuse panel, does anyone know about this and has anyone had sucsess with a scangauge 2 as I'm thinking of getting one for mine.

Your 2005 is different then my '02, but I would guess you have a OBDII style connector and the Mitsubishi MUT connector.
Here is a poor photo of the 2 connector types (on my '02 they are next to each other)

I'm a huge fan of Scangauge and run them on all but one of my vehicles. I wish my Fuso provided the OBDII data, but it does not .
Here are a couple other threads on Fuso-OBDII-MUT

OBD tool for 1997 canter

Hi, hopefully someone on here can help (this is all beyond me)

I would really like to buy one of these sort of displays (or something similar - does not have to be HUD) but I want it to work on my 1997 Canter 4.2 diesel bus.

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/201159367065?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

Any thoughts?

I posted on a forum here once before about something similar but it seems there may be new information out there?

Thanks

Alan

On Australian Fusos (I cannot speak for the US models) the data that comes out of the OBD connector is not actually OBDII data.
I think that you will be hard pressed to find any "generic" OBDII device, like the HUD you linked to, that will work in a Fuso. But... please share if you do.

I could be totally wrong but I believe that with a 4.2 engine that you won't have an engine computer to connect it to.

I replied to your email, but I'll also post the infomation here.

Sorry to hear of your troubles :(
But WOW, Kirgyzstan ! :Wow1:
Below are two PDF links

They ares, one if you have the MUT-II (I'm guessing you don't) and one using the 'flash codes'.
The plugs(that act as 'switches') are on the passenger side, under the flip down panel which has the windshield washer fluid tank.
Mine is a LHD and 2002 so your location might be different.
.
Please let me know if I can be of any more help

Mark

Hi all. I know this is a very old thread, but I am in dire need of some help. I have a 2001 Canter that is in limp mode and no auto electrician or mechanic is interested in working on it as they have no knowledge. The truck goes into limp mode after 6 seconds and orange engine light illuminates, so I want to read the error code through flash codes on dash. I cant find information anywhere how to do this but I investigated a little and found this loose wire near the OBD port saying 'Diagnostics Check' and another saying 'Memory Clear' so I unplug the Diagnostic Check' wire switch on the ignition on and I'm getting a solid repeat flash with equal pauses between flashes which I think means '10' and therefore no fault?? Am I doing something wrong? As there is a fault as I cant get the truck above 35mph and is constantly in limp mode after 6 seconds of starting up.

I would really appreciate some help, on am I doing the Diagnostics check correct, or ideas on how to fault find the problem?

Thanks Steve
