Guess it's time for an update on my rig. It's now up to ~221k miles and I finally gave it some TLC:
  • 35" E rated Nitto Ridge Grapplers
  • 17x8.5 Hummer H2 wheels with stock Dodge center caps
  • Bilstein 5160 shocks with external reservoirs
  • Metal Cloak front control arms
  • 14" brakes from a 3rd gen Dodge

Some of the goodies...

And with the new (to me) wheels and new tires...

This past weekend I packed it up to go to Big Bend National Park in very southwest Texas. Until I do more of this, I haven't been able to justify more permanent mods to get the truck ready for this kind of thing. That being said, I definitely need to fab up a better bracket for a full size spare and since I had such a good time, I definitely envision some more mods coming up for the truck.

Great looking truck!
Curious on the braking difference between the second and third gen front brakes?

I am on my third dodge Cummins-my current one is your trucks twin, But without the tasteful upgrades yet. Although I did have the metal-cloak control arms on my 07 and thought they were a great product.

I'm wanting to do much better suspension on my current 01, but I'm torn in the suspension department-so any input from you would be much appreciated! If you'll bear with me-I have a few questions: How do you like the 5160 shocks? Where would you recommend getting them? How much better is the ride? If you had to do it over again-would you have gone with Fox or Kings instead?

Thanks! The brakes feel a whole lot better than they did, but I think I may have another hydroboost leak so the brakes still don't seem to be as good as I think they can be.

The 5160s are pretty nice and I'm happy with them. Keep in mind I'm coming from old 'n' busted Monroes, but the best way I can explain it is the truck now feels taut, but not harsh. They're definitely pretty firm, but by no means are they uncomfortable. In all honesty, I was hoping for something a bit more plush, but that could be the springs. So the eventual plan is to get rid of the 2.5" spacers and get some 2.5" springs with a softer spring rate. Not sure how the Fox or Kings compare with regards to damping (or cost), so can't really compare. The Bilsteins were pretty affordable. Overall, I'm happy with them and would get them again....

I had the 5160's on my 2006 for about a year and then upgraded to Thuren Kings(3 years ago). The 5160s were a lot better than stock but compared to the kings you get what ya pay for. 1/2 mile of washboard the stocks would be faded and useless, maybe 2 -3 miles on the 5160s but the Kings almost never fade even after 15 miles of blasting down constant washboard hauling a heavy camper.

Just my experience.

Chris, what about ride quality on the road? How do the Kings compare to the 5160s?

I have my Kings valved for carrying a heavy camper, so when the truck is loaded it's smooth. But unloaded is abit rough. It's all compromises.

The 5160s were abit softer so the camper swayed more, but unloaded the 5160 are softer than my Kings. The beauty of Kings or any of the higher end shocks is the custom tuning.

Really appreciate the responses fellas! My dream is Thuren springs AND King's, DOR shackle flip/block removal, and track bar with 08+ steering linkage topped off with MetalCloak ca's.

Better start selling things/saving!

TommyR-let me know about those brakes after you get then dialed in would you?
