International scout II or other old iron

I always wonder why people choose new rides instead of classic iron for overlanding. granted a new truck may not break down for a very long time but when it does the results can be very hard to diagnose and fix. many systems are tied to one another and the failure of one can cause symptoms in another plus with all the electronics you almost need a electrical engineering degree to work on them.

I'm right there with you; my primary overland vehicle is a 1980 FJ40 Land Cruiser:

I know this is a very old thread but any other old iron out there anybody is working on or using?

I have a couple Internationals, 79 Scout II and a 72 4x4 1510 dually that is more of a work truck than an explorer, but still pretty cool, and kinda rare.

I love the vintage stuff, always have. Reliable and super easy to fix, but lacking in some comfort I suppose. I also have two CJ7s and a 67 Chevy 4x4 van. These are all total opposites from my 13 Land Rover LR4....haha.

Old Scout 800 getting built for exploration

There are a few of us with Scouts on here.
I've got a very long drawn out build of a Scout 800 Comanche with a Cummins 4BT, working towards exploration travel.
The build is in the signature below.
The goal is comfort, economy, drive-ability & reliability.

Picture one: Mall Crawler poser shot (OK, actually it's at the gas station... ;))
Picture two: Completed 4BT/4L60E/Dana 300 with Tera-Low gear set, that replaced the original 304V8/T19/Dana 20.

1979 Scout Traveler 345 here. I am very torn on whether to fix the rust and build up this truck, or to just continue saving for something cleaner. It has been incredibly reliable mechanically, the interior is in great shape and the frame is solid, however it is needing new floors, cab mounts, rockers, quarters, etc.

Sounds like you already know you want to fix and build. The hard work will pay off. Nice rig.

Beautiful truck. Like the diesel conversion, but that 4bt is going to rattle your teeth out.

Yeah, I've done a lot of work on that front. I worked with Rob Bonney on a custom torque converter plate adapter, that is filled with polyurethane, then used a fluidamper for a 6BT (which also included a bracket for CPS :)). It also has the Lord hydraulic engine mounts. All in all the vibration level is about like any other 4 cylinder diesel now.
The sound level... well that's a different story. lol
Going to work with ATP for an oil pan cover, valve cover blanket, etc. Similar to their 5.9L setup. I think they have done this for another 4BT already.
Then it needs a good exhaust system.
As it stands, going down the freeway is really quiet and smooth as far as the drivetrain is concerned. Still a lot of wind noise. In town, and idling with the windows down, sounds like an old 7.3L Ford. So that is the next area of sound reduction, after the exhaust.

Hey guys -

I digitized some old Super 8 video and found this clip of one of our Scout II's we had when I was young. Between parents, me and my brother, we had 2 Scout II's and 2 Scout's. They would take a beating!

Its nice to see there is still love for the old Scouts. I grew up with a 73 and that's what I used to learn to drive. It squeaked, it rattled, and it was prone to using only two wheels on the corners, but it always got the job done.

Love the old Scouts. My Dad had a '65 that came from factory with positraction on both axles and a Garrett (Airesearch) turbo charger which he traded on a 1967 266 V8. His last one was a '71 800B with 304 and my brother bought a matching one as well-both were red. I had a 1969 304 800 at the time which served me well until I bought an 1975 II also a 304. I should have bought the 345 as I think it was a better motor. I restored a 1970 SR2 which I gave my oldest boy after he gave up his '77 II. After a number of Toyotas and a Jeep Rubicon, I am back in a new 4runner TRD Offroad-all I need for what a mid sixty year old body can do. I do miss the Scouts and glad there is so much interest in them.
