Vehicle air conditioning really necessary?

My Suzuki doesn't have it. When my wife and I were coming back from the Overland Rallies and Workshops in Washington, it was 100 degrees going across central Washington/Oregon. She had also caught a summer cold. It was miserable, more for her than me, but it was still damn hot. If she hadn't had a cold it would've been bad, but it was terrible driving into the sun with no reprieve from the heat. But here in the Northwest, there have only been a handful of times I really wanted it and didn't have it.

The other time was exploring some areas outside of Bend, OR. It was 90 and the dust was some of the thickest I've seen. Windows up kept dust out, turned the truck into a sauna. Windows down meant choking on dust from the rigs in front.
