Cooper Discoverer ATP tires

Im going to get new tires this week in probably 265/70/17 on my 04 4runner. I am kind of on the fence with what i want to do. I have the money together to get some of the more expensive tires like the BFGs of the ST Maxxs but now that im about to pull the trigger i keep thinking of going with tires that are still good but not quite as expensive and then having some cash left over.

Im thinking about he cooper discoverer ATP tires. I actually have a set on my 00 F250 but i havent really taken that truck offroad much since its mainly what we use to pull trailers and stuff plus its such a different size vehicle. Has anyone used the ATP tires in any harder offroad use? or should i just spend the money and get a more expensive tire?

No personal experience with the Cooper Discoverer ATPs but, since you've garnered over 120 views with no replies yet, I'll give it a shot...

I've seen lots of half-ton pickups getting ATPs mounted/balanced at Discount Tire locations over time. Lots of people are running those tires around here (maybe not as many as are running the ubiquitous BFG All-Terrain T/A KO), so I figure the Cooper ATPs have got to be pretty decent for people to keep coming back like that. However, I also know that Cooper released the newer Discoverer A/T3 at the same time as the S/T Maxx, and it is supposed to be an improvement over the ATP.

As an FJC owner I know one of the bigger issues with the 265/70-17 size is the lack of C or D Load Range tires. There are few choices and not all are relative bargains. It seems we are stuck with mostly Standard Load (SL) P-Metric tires or overly heavy/stiff E Load Range tires. The more highway-oriented P-Metrics generally don't suit the capabilities of our trucks while the E Loads are so heavy they unnecessarily hurt mileage, ride, and maybe even the ability to conform well when aired down on lighter-weight vehicles. For example, I know for a fact that the Nitto Trail Grappler is almost bulletproof, but it is seriously heavy and the sidewalls are so stiff that there was no significant bulge in the sidewall of a 35x12.50-17 until it was aired down to less than 15PSI on a 2-door Wrangler. There are currently C Load offerings for the BFG All-Terrain ($230ea) and Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac ($246ea), but there is also a C Load version of the newer Cooper Discoverer A/T3 for around $200ea (mount/balance not incl.).

I would also highly recommend you take a look at the Falken WildPeak AT (aka tha Falken Rocky Mountain ATS from Discount Tire). It is another of those 'in-between' tread designs that is not as aggressive as the BFG All-Terrain or Duratrac, but it is surprisingly capable off road, really really good in wet weather, and a real bargain. A good friend of mine is very happy with them on his 80-Series. Only drawback is that they currently have only P-Metric or E Load variants available in this size. Still, for the price ($156ea for E Load) they are worth considering.

Other suggestions might include the Hankook DynaPro ATM RF10 and Nitto Terra Grappler AT. Here's the full listing of 265/70-17 Tires (including those shown above) @ Discount Tire Direct - http://www.discounttiredirect.com/d...r=70&rd=17&counter=0&fl=&sortBy=prca&fqs=true
Good luck and bring us some pictures when you finally decide! :ylsmoke:

My two cents, about what it's worth. I have had the coopers on my 2500 ram for two years and haven't liked them since i pu them on the truck (285's) lousy in the mud and wet grass, a real pain to balance took several tries and they never have been right. They do wear well. I have had duratrcs and really liked them. They work well and wear was good. If I can't find a good 255/85 for the 4 runner I will go with durtracs

Go for it!

I have really been disappointed the last two sets of BFG AT KO that I have purchased - realistically you are now paying a lot of money for a tire that will only go for about 40K miles. I run them on a Jeep TJ and Tacoma and both vehicles were unable to reach the 50K mark. The last set on the TJ reached 55-60K, and I could have run them another summer. Trying to figure out what to put on the Tacoma next. I rotate/align and maintain both vehicles.

It seems along the way BFG stopped the tread wear warranty when the “improved” the rubber compound for traction, but sacrificed tread wear. At least Discount Tire warranties the tire for 50K.

I've had the ATP's a little over a year now. While I did like them initially, I'm contemplating an upgrade. They seemed decent in snow and offroad, but just don't feel like they really hold the road well on turns and can be sloppy in wet conditions. I think there are better options out there now.

i think ill give them a try on the 4runner. Its just hard to beat that price, i have them on my f250 and i really like them on just the road and mild trails but havent used them in anything tougher. Seems like all the reviews i find for them online are pretty good also. Will the 255/85s fit on my 4runner or should i go with the 265/70s.

Look at the Cooper AT3. I have them on my Tacoma and love them. Great on road and wet road traction. Drove all through Big Bend on sand, dirt, and rocks and never felt I needed more traction. I don't have any mud experience though.

I have them too, load range c, on my 02 4runner. Great tire, good offroad, hold up to sharp rocks well, good wet, dry, or snow traction. I have about 34k miles on them with about half tread left. I'll replace them with the same tires.

Has ST in 255 but the rumor mill says they will have maxxs by year end. Since 255's are 33" you might get sume rubbing on the inner fender. 04 4 runners have smaller wheel wells then my 02
