I've always like very light vehicles that are very durable and small - Check out this home-made buggy which uses a 2cv engine/tranny mounted in the middle sideways to drive to additional differentials - this gives really low gearing (depending on the axle ratios) and good front rear balance - and a center differential as well. This one even has four wheel steering!

It was done commercially in a military vehicle called a "Lohr Fardier" also - it even included a very unusual center differential lock. I happen to have one...
I think this idea - but with straight axles on each end - would really be something. It could have great articulation and super light weight.
