Looking for the ultimate offroad concept

I've always like very light vehicles that are very durable and small - Check out this home-made buggy which uses a 2cv engine/tranny mounted in the middle sideways to drive to additional differentials - this gives really low gearing (depending on the axle ratios) and good front rear balance - and a center differential as well. This one even has four wheel steering!

It was done commercially in a military vehicle called a "Lohr Fardier" also - it even included a very unusual center differential lock. I happen to have one...

I think this idea - but with straight axles on each end - would really be something. It could have great articulation and super light weight.

I doubt a snowmobile has any offroad capabilities at all. I also already built something like a snowmobile, so i don't need another one...

I would argue that it has almost nothing but offroad capabilities since you never see them on road, just offroad in snow...which was one thing you stated that you wanted to do. I think with a newer snowmachine style set up, some lift, better front wheels/tires..it'd do better than you think.
