I'm wondering how much an exhaust leak is able to effect performance/ percieved symptoms. It's very apparent to me, at least, that there's a leak, because on the flange itself you can see carbon sprayed off in one direction. This leak is on the downpipe side of the exhaust flange that connects to the passenger side header...
No pics, sorry. Didn't have my camera with me last night when I was poking around underneath my Trooper, but I did whip up a quick drawing of what I saw:
My symptoms are:
-Bit of a stumble/miss but only under load. When it sits and idles you can't feel/hear a thing.
-Very, very slight exhaust smell in the cab when idling (notice it maybe once a week, for the last month or so. I thought it might be another vehicle near me whose exhaust was blowing my way...lol)
-poor economy compared to when I bought it. Most recent tank, filled up today, calculates out to 13mpgs. when I bought it and even when I put the bumper on, it was up around 17-18.5 or so.
-Lots of black carbon in EGR valve, throttle body, tailpipe, etc. I was thinking this was from oil consumption, but I'm wondering if the O2 sensors could be detecting the leak and interpreting it as a lean condition and then consequently dumping more fuel into the combustion chambers, richening the mixture. Does that make sense to anyone?
I'm gonna stop by my favorite exhaust shop this weekend and see if they can simply weld it up for me. I'm wondering what kind of improvement I'll see, though...
