Unimog engine replacement options

If you put a (petrol) higher rpm engine in you will have horrendous fuel consumption (I estimate a minimum of 40L/100km at 100 kph, maybe 45-50) and you will increase the stress on the known weak point of the drivetrain, the portal gearboxes (due to higher speeds you desire).
I would recommend: 1) 395/85R20 XZLs (46.7" as opposed to the ~44.5-45.0" with current tires) or even 14.00R20 XZLs (49.5")
2) Claas overdrive (a well respected and well-to-do correspondent of Benzworld has spent thousands of dollars and several years trying to adapt alternative overdrives like the Ranger to a Mog similar to yours and has a series of broken U-joints to show for it)
3) Make a resolution to not drive over 95kph and to enjoy the lower rpm/noise and possible decreased fuel consumption due to the above modification(s).

My U500 camper has an 8th gear overdrive (0.736:1), 5.92 diffs/portals and 395/85R20 XZLs and has a "top speed" OF ~110KPH. But I drive it even on freeways at only 97kph due to: fuel consumption considerations, safety and concerns about portals. In Australia on 2 lane roads I drove it at 80-85 kph.
By the way, if your stock engine has been well cared for it will not be your main source of maintenance issues.
I agree with John that contacting UNIDAN is a good idea.

By the way you could install a U500 gearbox (working gears recommended, trans oil cooler strongly recommended) with the 8th gear overdrive but 1st is only 9.57 instead of 13.01 and it runs about $40000 new.
