My new to me tires are taking their time getting here and I'm getting antsy. I'm going to try busting all these down and remounting myself. We'll see how far into that I get. I tried it once with this current set and found a couple things. That beadlock ring does not want to come out. Due in large part it seems to sidewalls that are hard as a freakin rock. I mean not like 0 flex but more like -0.5 flex. Hopefully these new ones are more forgiving.
Front end alignment matters HUGELY. I was starting to get serious death wobble and at first I chalked it up to those big, heavy, never quite evenly worn military tires. After swapping tires around a bit with no effect I figured front end wear. Had that checked by 2 different shops with a thumbs up from both. Next thought was the always slightly sloppy feeling steering box, but headed to the alignment shop first.
Even though they seem completely incapable of aligning to anything except factory specs ( I gave them the numbers I wanted and they promptly ignored them) after the alignment it is worlds better. I can still feel it lurking there on the edges, but it isn't a foregone conclusion every time I go for a ride now.
I gave them numbers passed on to me by Chris, explained to them that it was because the entire front end is custom so there are no "factory" specs, and then they went and aligned it to standard Ford E350 numbers. I even wrote it all down with numbers in inches and also converted to degrees so they had something to go by no matter which system their machine used.
Anyway, a bunch better but I'm going to take it back, explain it all all over again, and see if they can't get it spec'd according to Chris's numbers. I'm hoping that once done will be a major difference.
