Height Adjustable RTT Rack

I bought my expedition trailer from this forum last fall. On the way north to pick up the trailer I bought a new Tepui Gran Sabana RTT. I had everything I needed....except for a height adjustable rack for the RTT that would allow me to use the annex on the Gran Sabana. I have no welding or fabrication skills or tools and after countless hours scouring forums for ideas I took my problem to the guys at San Diego Mobile Welding. The design they came up with works great, is easy to use and even allows me to to it by myself if needed. Here are some pictures. If you live in the SoCal area and are in the market for a rack I highly recommend these guys for great custom work at a great price.

The trailer has no lid. The inside is accessed through the tailgate and two side doors. This allowed them to weld the rack directly to the top of the trailer. The rack consists of two cross bars made from pipe that slide through sleeves on each corner. The crossbars are connected by 1x2 bars. The RTT is bolted to these bars. Each cross bar can rotate individually (at a pivot point on the top of trailer) which allows me to raise one side at a time without the cross bars binding. The pivot points and cross bars (while in the up position) are held in place by 1/2" pins.

Call me dense but i am not getting how it works. Does the tent pivot on the cross bars or do the legs on the trailer pivot?

Thanks

Smart design there, the pivot point on top is a great idea. Hope you don't mind me sharing my solution to the same problem.

It's a Thule truck bed rack with the "feet" turned backwards and a 30" RV stabilizer jack. The rack was kind of expensive but after doing the math on materials and fabrication labor it didn't seem that bad.

I use the Thule truck bed rack as well, but manually raise each side which is not the easiest. EJ - your setup looks great with the stabilizer jack.

pacnw - cool idea! A few questions - 1) Do you have any supports between the crossbars running from the front to the back of the trailer? And B) Do the sleeves and downtubes from the crossbars then just swing once you remove the pins as you're raise the opposite end of the tent? Lastly - is there any reason the front crossbars are slightly offset or is it just for access to the side doors?

Thanks!

I was inspired to use the rack by this thread

Maybe with a metal trailer tub you could weld on angle iron to clamp to?

dammit Josh, now I'm back on this idea for my M100 trailer. Ever since I saw yours at CFW it's been in the back of my head.
Do you know which model Thule rack you have?

Were you going to have Daniel do the fab work? because I thought about the custom fab idea as well, inspired by this post:

It's a Thule Xsporter. My one big complaint with my setup is that there is very little "slop" where the uprights go through the clamps. I get some binding when raising it up, not a big deal IMO and I'm getting it smoother with some tinkering. I just tied the four crossbars together with superstrut channel to stiffen the structure up and take some strain off of the tent. I'm going to mess around with the jack next, as it is it sometimes takes an excruciating two minutes to raise the tent

If you decide to get something fabricated definitely talk to Daniel or Stumpy.
