12V X10? Wireless Light Control

dzzz

How can I do home automation in a camper? I will wire all the basic lights in a traditional manner. But for the rest of the stuff I would like a flexible, easily changeable system.
I know the newer protocols include wireless, but I haven't seem mobile devices.

The whole carputer scene has got to have something by now. Probably a bluetooth-enabled control would be easiest to implement. You could also get a cheap PLC and use the plug-in modules to modify your inputs (remote) and outputs (light switches). Could be a cool project, but at the end of the day it would be far more complexity than you need while...camping...enjoying the great outdoors....and all that.

Check out the www.x10.com website. They are first rate for home automation and may have some ideas for you in your applications. I have used them and they are reasonable, service oriented, and reasonably priced.

I agree X-10 is a great way to get into home automation and can be very powerful at a good price But will not work in this application. X-10 addresses through power line carrier and requires 110v true sign wave to operate.

Z-wave is wireless. There is a way I could use that system with relays. I couldn't find a stand alone 12v wire in module. But a manufacturer would not have much difficulty making these as z-wave boards are inexpensive.

From what I found out so far, with z-wave I would run Cat 5 from a signaling device to a relay at each light. The voltage over cat 5 would trip a relay for on-off. With that in place I can control the light from many locations, or programatically.

This saves me from wiring four way switches. and allows these lights to be integrated into my security system. I was going to build a little low power always on computer anyways. I will include a web server and wifi that would allow me to connect with the vehicle.

Might be too simple for what you want, but might give you some ideas.

I use them for my Cargo box lights and cradle mounted winch lights. They have been doning a good job.

Just a little update.
The Optronics HyperX wireless light control that I had been using was very good. Sadly I let the remote control go with my old truck. That means replacement was needed. Sadly Optronics control seems to have been discontinued.
I tried a couple of the cheap ebay wireless controls Like I posted above and could not get control of the relay bounce. They just did not work!

I found mine through Amazon for $34 delivered [ame=http://www.amazon.com/CYRON-LIGHTING-WIRELESS-REMOTE-RC2-12/dp/B0031794IS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1289605409&sr=8-1]CYRON LIGHTING WIRELESS REMOTE 12VDC 20A RC2-12[/ame]
This unit is rated for 20A which should be more than enough for my two 35W HID offroad lights.
