Rugged Electric Coffe Pot Reccomendations

I use the cusinart 4 cup one, when the espresso machine isn't fired up (an 11ltr 220vac machine doesn't come up to temp quickly) - and it's a generally decent coffee maker. Small, unbreakable SS charafe, hotel style, auto-timer on the power. Perfect for one - two people. My only issues with it is spillage. Some people don't have an issue with it, but the spout design is problematic for many people, myself included, and dribbles like crazy some mornings. I finally took some Sugru (http://sugru.com/) to it and reshaped the spout; and it's a much less frustrating experience in the morning. The Stainless Steel carafe is a mixed blessing, since you can't see if there is any coffee left; although with such a small capacity pot, it's a minor issue.

Generally I like it quite a bit, and have an extra one floating around somewhere...

Otherwise I'm a big fan of the Aeropress, and have had one since 07 or so, when Alan Adler first came out with them. He's a really interesting guy (Stanford electrical engineer who has invested some interesting stuff, one of which you might have in the toybox - the aerobie disk) and participates in the coffee forums fairly actively. great article: http://priceonomics.com/the-invention-of-the-aeropress/

French press...best cup of coffee you'll ever have...and only need hot water...

This. We used our for camping only, and 3 or 4 years ago retired our rather expensive drip/carafe coffee maker and only use the french press now. Best coffee ever.

Ahhh...the coffee wars rears its ugly head again. :D

My mom had an Elektra, like this:

I was hanging off the handle of that thing since the time I was big enough to reach it. Dunno how many times I tore it down and rebuilt it over the years to clean and polish it.

Grew up with GOOD coffee.

What do I use? A stovetop espresso machine, a.k.a., Italian Percolator, a.k.a., Moka Pot. Like this:

THAT's the best. And, easy to clean out in the field. No muss, no fuss, fresh perfect espresso. They make them in all different sizes, and in stainless steel as well.

As others have said, I give my endorsement to the Aeropress. My french press broke in the camper leading me to seek out this morning bliss.

edit: I only mention here not to say that it's the best coffee, but that it's made of plastic thus fitting one of the requirements...

...and it makes the best fricking coffee!

Ok, I think you guys have convinced me. I am ordering an Aeropress to try my next trip.

They look pretty awesome and I hear that they make an excellent cup of Java. I was all set to buy one to try it out, and my wife (who originally wanted to try one) changed her mind based on the polycarbonate (plastic) construction. I am certain that the BPA free stuff is fine, she does not like anything hot touching plastic before consumption.

Probably a good plan, but limits a lot of stuff. lol

Report back on how you like it!

What I didn't like about aerospress is it only makes 1 (or 2 at most) cups of coffee. Our French press(es) are 32 oz and double wall insulated. So I get up early have my 2 cups...and there is still 1 left for the Misses that stays hot for a long while (hours?).

We have one Bodum we use at home; http://www.amazon.com/Bodum-1308-16-Columbia-Stainless-Steel-Thermal/dp/B00005YY9X/ref=sr_1_16?s=kitchen&ie=UTF8&qid=1413806175&sr=1-16&keywords=french+press

And now a http://www.rei.com/product/784621/rei-campware-stainless-steel-java-press-33-oz that we use camping.

It is easy to crank out a few cups with the aeropress. As long as beans are already ground :).

Since they are so cheap, it is not a big deal to have more than one in operation and it's a good idea to have a spare for when you or someone else throws away the filter holder.

I heat up a large pot of water and fill a Stanley thermos to use for follow up cups later in the day.

Another nice thing about the aeropress is the ease of cleaning up. A big deal to me while camping.
